First trade: Van. Nemec might one day become Hughes but that is a gamble and the 1st isn't enough. Now, maybe Van trades for Guentzel and needs cap space?

Canucks say no. Nemec is great but it takes more than a mid 1st round pick to upgrade from him to a top 3 dman in the whole league

Canucks definitely decline. Hughes is easily a top 5, arguably top 3 defenceman in the league. There chance Nemec becomes as good as Hughes is probably less than 1%, he'll be great bust absolute best case scenario is they're even. Chances are Nemec becomes a good to great top 4 defenceman, but he won't be Hughes. Giving up the surefire top 3 defenceman for a chance at getting one back doesn't make any sense, when the odds are that guy doesn't even reach Hughes' potential. Getting a late 1st doesn't come close to moving the needle on that front, the chances that pick turns into an impact player are already not great.
