this is a Trev Team

Created by: Wz92

Initial Creation Date: Mar. 28, 2024

Description
To people more experienced than me,,,

Can you have a guy on a ELC, who is waiver exempt, like Cowen or Minten and just use them as your extra roster guy? As long as you have the cap right?

I'd also be curious what people think Samsonov would sign for and if people think 2M is too little

gudbranson and kampf are negative assets (they both serve a good purpose to be fair)... curious if CBJ thinks robertson and holmberg equate to the 1.6M retention (CBJ fans that dont watch the leafs pipe down lol)

Sure you could healthy scratch Cowan or Minten, but why would you? Better to let them develop in the AHL.

Whats the deal with Timmins? Why do so many ACGM want to get rid of him? Hes 25, has decent metrics, and only makes 1m?

we have a logjam of forwards already. I dont really think that package would interest the jackets at all. We would be looking for picks more than bottom 6ers. So i guess to answer question, no Holmberg and Robertson would not equate to 1.6 retention, at least not from us.

He's injured all the time.

Jackets have a logjam at forward as it is. Half the lineup is middle 6 players. Biggest need are top line forwards and this trade does not accomplish that, sadly makes it worse.

I think the bigger issue for Columbus (over the logjam of bottom-6 forwards, as others have said) is that Gudbranson isn't viewed as a negative asset anymore, at least by the organization. He's a core leader on a very young team, and we don't have another right-shot defenseman that plays his style.

He's not good, and he's overpaid, and yes he makes the defense slightly worse. But his internal value is still higher than his trade value, so we're better off keeping him around to fill that role than doubling down and acquiring worse assets.

By the way, Kampf has a shocking -23% relative xGF% and a 33% on-ice goals-for %. Guds is also a 33% GF%, but on a worse team and with a -11.6% relative xGF%. Without a cap crunch, I'd honestly rather have Gudbranson for shorter term at a higher cap hit than Kampf for the extra year at a lesser cap hit.

Robertson + Holmberg are absolutely worth 3.2M total retained over 3 years, but that's not the issue I have with the trade.

Why would any fan want a "This is a Trev team" His record shows he isn't a good GM.
But it so typical, Leafs fans wanting to get rid of mid to bottoms as if they are the problem.

obviously gudbranson has long been an analytics punching bag, but according to the athletic's player models, he actually is a positive player in terms of defensive impact. this is while also (according to dom's piece today, anyway) having usage that is unfavorable for defensive metrics.

We can sign someone who’s better that him and save the pick.
