Habs won't be desperate for cap space. Probably the year Anderson's contract is ending. At that point a playoff team would pay something for his services at 50% retained.

Sorry, not that interesting. Zaitsev won't be back. Hawks will look to upgrade that open spot on RD. Hawks definitely aren't trading Reichel for another young LD. Vlasic is the #1 LD and gets paid more than what you have. Montreal isn't giving up a 1st to dump Anderson. And the Hawks aren't spending pick #34 on Laine. Doubt Columbus accepts a 2nd and 4th for Laine anyway. Much rather have Donato than that 4th and Entwistle.

Yeah Habs aren’t doing that, We aren’t desperate to dump Anderson, and until we are, we won’t be making a trade like that to dump him

I don’t know if I would agree. That 2nd is more like a late 1st. Really it depends on what the trade accomplishes for the Jackets. The Jackets would not be retaining anything on Laine’s contract. That money could be used to secure via FA or trade for a true 1C. Not saying it is great value but could be appealing if their is an ulterior motive.

It's an ok return, if the new GM decides it's time to be competitive, he can't trust Laine to stay healthy, and the $8.7M can be used elsewhere.

I'd rather keep him. Next year isn't the year to go for it, so it makes more sense to keep him and hope for a bounceback to either increase his trade value or cement him as a longer-term contributor.

I don't think Donato blocks anyones path. He has been utilized in all situations, and seamlessly fits in with anyone he plays with moving up and down all 4 lines. He plays C, LW or RW, penalty kill or power play. He forechecks, backchecks, and plays well transitioning. He breaks up plays and creates open ice for linemates to have scoring chances. This is one player that the young guys can watch and learn from, to develop other aspects of their game to stay in the league. Such as work ethic, keeping your feet moving, where to be when you don't have the puck. Reichel and Kaiser went back to Rockford because they wasn't doing the little things, and came back stronger late in the season. When you have an experienced player like Donato, they can learn a lot from him, until they can lock down that spot in the line up.

Even Bedard, who has tonnes of talent, can learn from guys like Donato, until he fills out some more over the next couple years. Bedard has the puck stripped away a lot, because he thinks he is 2 steps ahead, when he isn't anymore. He also doesn't know where to be defensively, and when he does throw a check or stick checks to steal the puck, he doesn't have control, and the opposition steals the puck right back. Staying on those plays and knowing the role of all your linemates is huge in the nhl. If you don't learn that chemistry, it makes for some tough shifts, and a lot of chasing the puck instead of creating chances. The Blackhawks won't win with just talented young guys. They need to develop the weaknesses in the young guys. There is no sense trying to build a team to win next year. Plug in those key veterans that can mold the young guys until it is installed in them how to play all aspects of the game for the next couple years.

cool story you should keep him then.

He does nothing but block paths for younger players on the penguins, so he's clearly more useful to CHI.

The only reason they trade him is if they can get better value elsewhere which I find hard to believe. If Guentzel pulls a Johnny gaudreau and wants to sign in Columbus for like 5 years 8 million AAV then sure but I find that hard to believe. Maybe they get a good deal on lindholm since he’s struggled this year. Just don’t see it happening though. If laine can stay healthy his trade value will go way up and they can trade him at the deadline when his contract is up
