Don't see Detroit doing that. We can buyout Holl if desired.
Toronto definitely is not doing that also Tavares wouldn't waive anyways.

Why would the leafs trade their Captin and 2nd line C for a mid 50s pick? He also wouldn't waive his NMC to leave his hometown city as the captin on a contender to go to a rebuilder in a differnt confernce and have to play in the best division

Even if TOR did do that. WTF would CHI buy him out.
10+ million to buy him out.... it's only 11 to keep him FFS.

Not to mention he put up 29 goals and 65 points this year that's better than Bedard....
But you going to buy him out?

I think he is saying that is all part of the pre-arranged agreement.

Tavares agrees to waive knowing he will be signing back with Toronto. Chicago agrees to buy him out knowing there a very little actual $$ to be paid and in return they jump up a round in the draft.

My question is why is Chicago sending anything back to Toronto if they are expected to eat a $10.4m cap hit? I tell Treliving you get nothing in return.

To Chicago: Tavares and Toronto’s 2024 1st round pick

To Toronto: FC

That trade is illegal cap circumvention and would not be allowed by the league. Even if it were legal, the only way CHI accepts is if it is after his signing bonus is paid.

I don’t disagree with you, I was just trying to interpret the initial post’s intentions.

I know that people are down on Tavares but even if he did waive his NMC to come to Chicago, we would have to give up something of value for him.

Also, this trade would presumably happen AFTER his bonus is already paid. The actual cost of buying him out would be almost nothing if TOR pays his bonus.

This whole proposed scenario has nothing to do with Tavares actually going to Chicago, it is about paper transactions carried out to free up cap space for the Leafs AND they get to sign Tavares back as a FA at a much more friendly cap hit.

Bonus isn't paid until 7/1. Buyout window closes on 6/29. Can't buy him out after bonus is paid.

Good point! Unless we have arbitration cases. Which is unlikely unless we trade for some RFA's who might require arbitration. But, yeah, if CHI is on the hook for his bonus, a pick swap won't do it. They would just have to straight up give us their 1st. Regardless, it still is illegal cap circumvention and could never happen.
