<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Black61</b></div><div>The only logic I can think of (and its really pushing it) is this.

Say the team wants to try and still make the playoff this year(thats a big part of this) but Klingberg in wanting out has become a problem. Looking at the pending UFA RD theres Letang (whos probably not available) then the gap after Klingberg is ......big. There no internal RD options in the system and noone you draft will be ready in a year. Which leaves Haakanpaa as the only RD.

Petry for the point slump he is in still has solid analytics. In the grand scheme of things his slump is pretty small relative to the previous 4 seasons where he was 13th in points among dmen. Stars management could think if he bounces back the got essentially klingberg on the contract they wanted.

This offseason if the market is at all similar to last year will be stupid for RD prices. Ristolainen may get Petry money on a 5-6 year term.

As crazy as it may sound If Klingberg isnt coming back that may unfortunately be the best replacement option.

As far as the trade goes the habs would likely be willing to take khudobin in the deal (which would allow you to keep the 2nd) and I could see a condition put on the trade that if the habs trade klingberg back to a western team the habs have to give up their 2nd (it would be around 35th overall so a decently valuable piece)

But even that is a pretty generous assumption</div></div>

Yeah, not saying it's realistic, but that's how I took it as well.

Does Nill want to go full rebuild? Like you said Petry's contract is pretty well what they'd want Klingberg back at.

And Petry is a better system fit if Bowness is still there for awhile.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>There is no way the Leafs have the cap without dismantling their team. And you can't trade or buyout players which would still give the Leafs cap. There are other good teams that could afford. Campbell and where he might like to play.
The only advantage the team that "owns" a player before he goes to UFA is offering him an eight year contract. Well that ain't happening so the Leafs really don't have any leverage.
Campbell and the Leaf management can talk all that want about their "mutual love". Fact is the Leafs didn't feel that love when they did not extend him last summer and actually signed another Mrzarek for three years.</div></div>

Campbell re-signing last summer, when he knew the No.1 job was there for him to win, would have been an incredibly foolish move on his part. Why would you assume the Leafs didn't "love" Campbell by not extending him? The wayyyyyyyy more likkly scenario was Campbell and his agent wanted to let the contract negotiations start after this season.

Everyone assumes it's always teams that wait too long, but the way this season is playing out for Campbell is the exact reason why it benefits players to wait to sign, when circumstances change heading into a contract season.

Leafs have half a dozen options to save cap without destroying the team/depth, 3 or 4 that would be happening regardless of Campbell re-signing.

Ritchie will be gone one way or another. Mrazek still has half a season to prove he's a quality 1B for some teams out there lacking decent goalie depth.

One or both of Dermott &amp; Holl likely are not Leafs next year, as both could/will be passed on the depth chart and are too expensive to keep around as 7th dmen.

Leafs could sell high on Kerfoot, and re-sign Mikheyev to $2-$2.5M, saving some cap there.

Finally, Leafs could explore moving Muzzin, allowing Sandin a role in the top 4. This plus moving on from Holl would allow the Leafs to explore bringing in a decent Top 4 RD option making $5M or less to play with Sandin on 2nd pairing. Even a declining Muzzin is better than 50% of the leagues top 4 options out there.
