<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cory</b></div><div>This pure rental stuff is funny. Dubois wants to win. Montreal is far from it and Arafay nailed it with his description. Hockey Writers came out and said that their are multiple teams that will be interested in Dubois. Carolina, NYR, Colorado, LA, Boston, and of course Montreal. If Kidney, Dvorak and a late first is all Montreal offers, then I am glad we can all shut the Dubois to Montreal fluff down because every one of those other teams will blow that offer away.</div></div>

THW say and write a lot of stuff with various degrees of legitimacy, like writing that MTL should be interested in Horvat (in a very similar article several months ago) despite his pending UFA status and them being in a rebuild or the Leafs should trade Nylander for Eriksson Ek.

Of the teams mentioned NYR, LA and Boston are currently very tight to the cap with other holes to fill. They would need to trade away some of their high salaried players to make room for PLD and likely require a third team to do so since most of these players have trade protection and WPG is likely to be on most of these (also BOS have probably the worst prospect pool in the league and no 1st or 2nd round pick for the next 2 years which adds more complexity). Carolina for their part are a very process driven team and well known to be unwilling to pay premium assets for pending UFAs. For them to beat the proposed MTL offer (Kidney, Dvorak, FLA 1st) they would 100% need PLD to be locked down with term or a dramatic shift in management policy. Colorado is more of a possibility but their cap situation is quite uncertain at the moment so its hard to speculate one way or the other.

All this to say that while many teams are likely interested in PLD actually trading for him will probably be more complicated than most people realize.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cory</b></div><div>Can I ask a serious question from all of the MTL fans? Why does everyone on here think they know what MTL will trade for Dubois? The reason I ask is TSN, The Athletic, Dreger, Lebrun have all mentioned that it would take Dach and even mentioned as of late the 5th overall pick. Now, I don't care what it turns out to be, but why does everyone on here think that they know more than the experts? I find it hilarious when people come on here and say "he will never be traded" "Dach is better than Dubois" "he's a non starter" "5th overall is not in play" These comments are so over the top ridiculous. None of us actually know anything. Now let me be clear. I am not putting anyone down and he may go for more, may be less. I have no idea what a trade for him will look like. I just want to know why everyone says no to everything, yet the experts are the ones saying this is what it will take. They also said that he would be willing to sign with a New York based team, but yet everyone dismisses that and assumes he is going to MTL when he is a free agent. When all that was said is one day I would like to wear a Canadiens jersey. Highly doubt he wants to go there now and lose for 5 years before they are good enough to compete for the cup.</div></div>

not sure what you are referring to as i havent seen anything mentioning Dach as an option and the only discussion about habs moving the 5th that i have seen is that they may try and move up. That being said i have seen that a potential package would start around Florida's first and Harris, but that was back when it looked like that first would be 17th overall so probably not a viable with the 29th. I think the reason why habs fans feel confident in turning down the idea that Dach or a 5th would be in play for dubois is because we have that hughes isnt a complete idiot. Would make little since to move dach who is on a better contract and looked like he still has room to grow for a centerman who is very similar. Also, as you point out, the habs arent going to be contenders in the next few years so why move out the 5th overall pick that may very well be Michkov who could turn out to be a steal assuming he ends up making it over here in 2026. Lastly theres certainly no guarantee that Dubois signs in MTL he could get moved to a contender and decide he wants to stay and the habs miss out, which i think they are fine with given that regardless they have to wait for their core to develop more before they are reading to compete and still have other major questions to answers, especially in net.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cory</b></div><div>Great feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for. Don't get caught up in the Winnipeg Jets. Just the team I picked to make the thread with. I am purely looking for the value of those players. Not what Winnipeg has to offer.

You are the first person I have ever seen on here with a clear knowledge and known direction of a team. I hate hearing they are untradable. That is not even realistic in any world.

Great job!</div></div>

It's not so much that either are untradeable, just that it would probably take an act of god for Adams to consider it. Adams also looks like he covets some of his prospects, a bit like Regier used to. Apparently when they were in discussions for Chychrun, Armstrong was asking for Savoie or Kulich which was a non starter for Adams. I can't really blame him as both look like potential top 6 players, but he does tend to gush when talking about some of them.

Buffalo also doesn't generally draw a lot of UFA's so historically they've had to build through the draft and smaller trades. So when they get players who want to be there, and then in the case of Cozens they sign a long term deal that looks like it could end up being a bargain they hold on to them tightly.

Even in the pre-cap era they often tried to target under the radar guys or young players they were sure they could retain for several years. Guys like Satan or Hecht were low key great players, and ones like Briere and Peca were younger guys they could keep for a while.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cory</b></div><div>What i am getting at as teams can negotiate contracts. Say Helle for instance. We all think he wants 8x8 but he may take 5 years and 4.5 mil because he believes the team will win a couple cups. Sort of like Selanne and Kariya did with Colorado. I feel on this site that a lot of people take a player and have super high expectations for them that they value them at what they believe will be his top end. Players are a lot like business. You evaluate them on right now, not what they might be because that is unknown. I think we all, including myself get wrapped up in our own heads and over value everything. If i came to you before the trade happened and put on here that I was trading Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson. Every person on here would have put me down.</div></div>

The problem with trading either of them involves how Buffalo is built and the nature of why they are built that way.

Adams has been a huge vibes and locker room culture guy. He has said numerous times that he wants guy who want to be in Buffalo, and Both Cozens and Power have expressed their desire to be there. Adams will value that much higher than he would an unknown quantity. If you look at the Eichel trade, he got a guy back in Tuch who grew up rooting for the Sabres and his dream growing up was to wear a Sabres sweater. You add the years of control, the contract for Cozens, and their potential given their ages and I'm not sure Winnipeg has the assets Adams would want for him to consider trading either of them.

The Jets have some excellent players, but most of them don't fit the age range for the Sabres core. They have some excellent forward prospects also, but again that is a huge strength for the Sabres as an organization. Their biggest areas of need are a top 4 Dman, and a starting goalie to bridge the gap to Levi being ready for the starters role. Losing Power instantly makes their top 4 D worse, and losing Cozens while probably not as painful for the team removes a player the organization loves and a kid who basically checks every one of Adams boxes and a few boxes Adams doesn't need checked. (size, compete, skill, wants to be a Sabre, good skating, great in transition, and he has some jam to his game).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cory</b></div><div>Honestly, love the feedback and how stoked you are all about a guy that could take years to develop. But, reality is you have a good team right now. You are literally just missing a key few pieces that will push you into the playoffs and then who knows what could happen. Why are you willing to wait for 4-5 years for a "maybe"? Seize the moment and don't waste guys with high end talent like Larkin's time. Waiting on a what if, that is so risky. If you have a chance to improve now and compete, you do it. You don't bet on prospects with such a long range forecast.</div></div>

In reality, a move like this gets us slightly better, but not good enough. Hellebuyck is a helluva goalie, so we'd upgrade there. Schifele, I'm not a fan, but place him at 2C. The only immediately loss to the team is Edvinsson, who'll be our 2LD (Stanley is not a replacement).

Our team would still be missing about 2 top 6 wingers and 2 RHD. Those things are literal holes that would need to be filled via UFA. This FA class stinks, so it'd have to be next year. But what if we don't get those pieces in free agency?

All of this to say; if we were to move into win-now mode, it's still a gamble. We need to win out free agency, which there will be probably ~20 teams competiting with us.

All of that to say; there are too many holes in this team to enter a win now mode. If we were to firesale all of our prospects, there'd still be holes.

I'd rather have a 7 year contention window 3 years down the line than a 2 year window now.
