Sharks Trade for Marner with Kane Package
If Kane had zero baggage, then this is probably the type of trade Toronto goes for...trading a very talented guy on a giant contract for a talented guy on a big contract.

Rangers fans just overrating their own players. Everyone wants to get a bargain...
However, you are doing the same thing with Simek! I imagine he has negative value around the league.

OK so generally "forward core" doesn't mean ALL the forwards. Forward core means the "core" of your forwards; your very best forwards.
Anyways, Compher would at best be 8th among the Sharks forwards, and easily the least valuable because of his contract. Compher is better than Nieto; I Comper at 1.3 over Nieto at league min. But I easily take Nieto at league min over Compher at 3.5.

Stop acting like he is some sort of Black Plague player, he is a good useful player that is a tad bit over priced, what you are saying about his is jus straight up lies. You can say you just dont like him as a player, dont flie in an effort to belittle him and make it seem he is worse than he is</div></div>
What is the Sharks's forward core, then? Let's see if that's where the confusion arises...

He's a low-end third-liner/high-end fourth-liner who is overpaid in a league where the cap is ~7 million less than what it *should* have been.

Sharks soft rebuild
I could see why the Rangers pass on Hertl, but I think that's the kind of return he's going to get (first-rounder, solid young player, B-level prospect). Admittedly I'm not that high on Chytil, who I view as more of a future 2nd-liner.
I think Bonino @1 million would be hugely valuable to a cap-strapped team like the Lightning. That's basically the Goodrow trade...
Colorado's window is open NOW. They get a first-line winger @3 million and cut Compher's cap. Newhook is an excellent prospect, but what are the odds he's even better than Meier? Again, Colorado's window is open NOW with Mackinnon's deal expiring.
To me, Burns is still a #1 D-man. Dobson is really good, but this trade would make NYI much better in the short run while hurting them in the long run. It depends on what they think their window is.

Connor Mcdavid I guess
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>I agree that this sort of deal would be lose-lose. Although a McDavid trade isn't going to happen in the next 4 years (if ever), there would have to be a marquee piece coming back plus prospects plus picks, rather than a collection of prospects & picks. Like this:
TB - Brayden Point ++
COL - Cale Makar ++
MIN - Kaprizov ++
TOR - Matthews ++
etc.
An 8-for-1 deal with no outstanding pieces doesn't get the Oilers to answer the phone.</div></div>
Sure, but it seems that McDavid would only be traded if Edmonton were rebuilding. In that case, why would you want to get a top player in his prime back? You'd want top picks and prospects.

Oilers easily say no.
In any case, I feel like any trade with McDavid is almost always going to be a lose-lose. Edmonton would be losing the best player in the deal, and integrating the quantity they are going to get in return is going to be a mess. The team acquiring McDavid is going to have to gut their depth, and such a big shakeup is going to cause a lot of problems.

This is a common refrain but it isn't true. Plenty of teams have won championships have won a cup with weak depth; very, very, very few have one without multiple bonafide superstars on their team. Depth looks a lot better when your star players dominate their minutes. That's what Makar can do...

California is able to charge 13%+ in taxes and still has people climbing over one another to be there.
Tampa Bay has no taxes and is a wasteland.
What place <em>really</em> sucks?
For the record, they are both fine places, with advantages and disadvantages. But overall I think that in Florida Miami and Orlando are the only places I'd want to live. California has numerous cities, including San Jose, that are great.

Colorado gets fantastic center depth while their window is wide open. Plus, they get rid of Compher's contract, which should be big going forwards.
Let's be real; that Tampa draft pick is likely to be very late, even if it is a strong draft.

TDL Horror Show
I think a lot of NHL GMs would trade Byram for Hertl, no question. If your window is open NOW, you trade futures for a better shot, no question. But there are some GMs who operate on a longer horizon. Keeping Byram gives Colorado a wider, if shallower, window.
You can find success either way, but the only teams since the lockout who've won with the latter approach are the Red Wings and maybe the Bruins.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>And if you watched them you would have known they were playing their 3rd string goalie against Dallas and lost in OT, and against the sharks if it wasn’t for a ticky tack offside call against landeskog they are on their way to then next round
But hey you’re more of an expert about a team you don’t cheer for</div></div>
If the refs make the right call on Zadorov in game 6, there isn't a game 7 to worry about. Anyone can play that game.

It's middling quantity for quality, exactly the trade the Sharks should avoid. If I am SJ, I'd look for something like Meier for Wahlstrom + first.
