That is an INSANE deal. Somehow Calgary WON the trade. They need to be convinced that Huby and Weegar will extend though

Still have some holes to fill, but we are getting there
The amount of talent we have coming is pretty crazy
After next draft, we’ll have had a 3year span in which we had
6 picks in the 1st, and another 6 in the 2nd
*and that’s on top of a decent group of kids we already had
(incl. Dahlin, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, Samuelsson & Mittelstadt)
Just need to fill in a couple of those holes,
& for a few of these guys to develop into top end talents
We certainly have the quantity
Just need to develop some quality now

We should not write a blank check for a player who will likely playing elsewhere a year later.
Add Siegenthaler, Sharangovich and Mercer to the list of guys we keep. And Holtz is likely more expendable.

Wouldn't mind Nyquist at all though in Calgary. Doesn't cover up the loss of 13, but he will score 40-50pts. For only 1yr, it's enticing</div></div>
I think the Flames are a pretty good fit, too. And we'd probably sweeten the deal with someone like Bemstrom or Foudy.

Goodbye Johnny
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ItWasIn</b></div><div>Thanks!
It's a tough day. But this has literally been rumoured/expected since 2016. The Gaudreau family said all the right things in front of the camera, but it never really felt like he would be spending 15yrs in Canada.
I've got no idea what to expect from the Flames now. Well, actually I do, I think they're gonna make a splash out of desperation. Treliving is in the final year of his contract, I don't think losing Johnny and then missing the playoffs is an option.
That being said, they have to act quickly on Tkachuk. They seemed confident they could sign Johnny. They were wrong. If Tkachuk will not sign long-term the Flames absolutely have to trade him. You can't lose 2/3 of your top line in consecutive seasons for nothing.</div></div>
That scenario is what reminds me of losing Parise and Kovalchuk in 2012 and 2013. Once one was gone, the other found a way out.
Of course, the league wouldn’t take away a top-10 pick if Tkachuk flees for St. Louis. At least there is that.

Goodbye Johnny
I remember 2012 UFA when Parise left New Jersey and how painful an experience that was as a fan coming off a great season (and trip to SCF). And I can imagine how Flames fans are feeling watching this all go down. Once Parise was gone, Kovalchuk left the next year and the whole organization spiraled from there. It still hurts just thinking about it.
Flames fans are some of the best around. People, be good to them.

I also think they really believe in Mackey and Valimaki, besides whoever plays with Tanev gets a bump. Wouldn't be crazy if Mackey or Valimaki look really good beside him like Kylington did.
My offer to Kylington would be the Forsling deal, 2.6x3. If he wants more, I'd explore a trade.</div></div>
Fair Enough, I've always liked Kylington more than most so I'm most likely overvaluing him a bit.

Trading 2nd overall pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ItWasIn</b></div><div>It's going to be a tough offseason for the Flames.
If Gaudreau leaves and if they are unable to get an extension with Tkachuk done, I could see them doing the trade you proposed.
I think both players' future in Calgary are connected.</div></div>
That would stink.
It would kind of be like when Parise and Kovalchuk left NJ after Devils’ 2012 SCF run. In some ways, we are still feeling the ramifications of so much leaving with nothing in return. Actually negative impact in return if you count the lost top-10 pick and cap hit we still pay for the whole Kovalchuk debacle.
My guess is that Gaudreau splits and Tkachuk stretches every dollar out of Calgary and stays. But Flames fans would know better than I would.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ItWasIn</b></div><div>I think it would be foolish for Tkachuk to not take a long term deal this summer. He just beat his career high by 27pts. A career year is the best time to cash in.
Even if he doesn't want to play the next 8yrs in Calgary, he should lock in and get paid. Players have more power now than ever, it's not like him signing is an 8yr sentence.</div></div>
I agree. He has earned that right to ask for top dollar. He is still young enough where the backend of that deal doesn’t look so hairy either.

Whether he wears out his welcome or not, term is never a good idea for a 31 year old power forward. There are countless examples of this: Lucic, Okposo, Eriksson, Backes, Ladd, etc. That player-type just doesn't age well.

For sure.
I dont see anyone giving Klingberg the kind of money he wants besides Seattle whom needs PMD. The connection to his old teammate Big Rig also makes sense. They need much scoring talent outside Eberle and McCann. The picks are nice but they have a luxury of picks the next few years and you dont want to have a losing culture.
Beniers looks like the real deal, they need to surround him with talent right away

I think the Canucks make a significant change or two, but it's not worth burning it down. There are pieces here, find players to help the core and then decide what to do with Miller.</div></div>
This is my take too, they're not so bad to tear it down and a retool will take a few years so its just more wasted time.
They have too many good pieces to waste years in a rebuild, its just a good way to piss off Hughes, Demko and others and risk the trade requests coming in.

He'll be turning 33 at the end of his last season. I don't think that's too old for a quality defenseman in the NHL. It's not like it's a Vlasic or Petry or even Karlsson contract.
