retool
Why in the world would Kessel be willing to go to a loser franchise in Arizona when he rejected the Wild? Besides why would the Coyotes trade future assets for a player on the downside of his career? Try again, your whole scenario is predicated on moving Kessel for no return salary. Kessel will only go to a cup contender, same for Hornquist.

God awful Defense. Worse than last year. Letang over the hill and mistake prone. Shattenkirk is a sieve the Rangers may buyout. Ilya is a crap shoot. Niskanen, Myers, Trouba all RD who are available and better in D zone and some much cheaper. Hell Kapi and a third may get you Trouba.

Two Trades DallasCalgary
Granted Hintz did well in the playoffs but his regular season was mediocre. Faksa is a better 2C. Hintz looks like more of a LW. Nevertheless Niskanen is the perfect RD for Heiskanen, mobile, responsible and a great team player who has won two Cups. Johanson is a former 1st round pick like Honka who could use a restart. If this is not enough what would you want as an addition? A pick? Another young player with potential?

Leaf My take
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GM_leafs81</b></div><div>100% agree with the Justin Holl comment. However, if we get a right-handed jake gardiner it'd would greatly improve our defense. I think that top-4 is a lot better than last year but please don't pencil in Holl as a starting dman. That proposed defense overall is worse than last year just because you'd have to play holl a regular shift.</div></div>
OK, you can resign Hansey for $1mil plus to deep six Hole. Leafs also have the option of playing Nylander as 3rd line center. Richardson is a great face-off man and penalty killer plus got 20 goals last season. Not your average 4th liner. The trades get a much better RD, resigns the young core of forwards and is cap compliant. You can't keep the entire forward group together and improve your RD's. Kadri is a distraction and is my pick to be moved for D.

Could this happen
All possible. Caps might be able to get slightly more for Burakovsky. Good job on Dallas trade, suggested a similar trade last week. Dallas is one of the teams Nisky would probably go back to given his MTC. Honka and Janmark both passed by other players. Ho-Sang and Johanson both need new teams. Good job.

NJ Solution
Caps have real cap problem. Niskanen needs to be moved out to resign Vrana and Connolly. Caps will also need to resign either Hagelin or Burakovsky. Hagelin is a UFA that fit in after the trade and helps a bad PK. Rights to Burky gets some return. Santini brings some grit to 3rd pair RD. The real goal is to get younger. Mcleod has potential and size but is redundant with Hughes coming and 3 Centers in front of him. Devils throw in one of their 3, 2nd round picks and in return pick up a top six forward and a top 4 RD with an expiring contract. I wish the Caps could get more but Devils like the Johanson trade get a good deal taking advantage of our cap problems.

Watch he will get multiple years from someone. He may not score much anymore but he is a plug and play on any line player. Great speed. Great on PK. Great in clubhouse. Hope Caps resign if not Pens or another team will..

Hagelin gets at least 2.5 from someone probably the Caps. Hornqvist is slow like much of the team and his value is questionable. Dump his salary before it is an anvil.

PANARIN
Agree goalies are important but Caps can't afford Holtby after 19 and future (Samsonov) needs another year. Riitch part of a trade makes sense. I like the trade, love Anderson, the pick and might gamble on the Czech goalie. Not sure how Flames afford Holtby. Panarin is a pipe dream. Going to one of the coasts where he can be the big dog. Would rather resign Vrana, Hagelin, Burky and Connolly with Holtby money.

WOW! Now that's a salary dump, one LA can't afford. Besides, Marleau will refuse to go. Will only go to cup contender. None exists with cap space for what you get. Nylander is a better bet to go and get you a quality RD. Leafs need two. Stopping goals, not scoring them is the problem.

Toronto solution

Not sure who are the real good players and the two decent players. Ellers contract is good for what you get. Kadri's is also. Niskanen is now slightly over paid for a top 4 RD. Zaitsev is a bad contract, playing higher than he should, in an environment he will continue to fail. He has talent but finished in Toronto. Kadri has also worn out his welcome. That can not be said about Nisky or Ellers. Both great in clubhouse, solid citizens and good mentors. Bracco gamble is a small price to pay to take flyers on two problems Leafs have.

Toronto solution
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jyoung</b></div><div>I don’t mind the trade but the cap hit doesn’t work for the leafs.</div></div>
This is not a solution to cap problems of either team. It is an option for Leafs to get proven winners who are good in the clubhouse and can mentor Leafs younger players, something they lack. Caps taking a bigger risk, in attitude, bad contract and potential. Leafs will have to dump at least 2 forwards to get a second quality RD and get money to sign Marner. Alternative is to trade Marner for young RD and like Anderson+ in CGY, Trouba+ in the PEG or Dumba+ in MN. One way or another Leafs need 2 RD and dump Zaitsev contract if they want the CUP.

Toronto solution
If you dump Z which he and Dubas want, Leafs need 2 RD. One to replace and a second for Muzzin. This gets you one, the second comes in a trade of one of your young forwards. Quality RD are expensive, just as is dumping Z's lengthy contract. Kadri is a distraction both on and off the ice. Eller is the consmante team player who has improved since coming from Habs. Bracco has potential but is small for the league and has proven nothing at NHL level. Caps are taking a risk of different sorts with all three players. Leafs getting proven winners and in fact saving money. 5.7 + 3.5 = 9.2 VS 4.5 + 4.5 + .8 = 9.8. Both teams are in a win now mode. This trade benefits both.

Connolly and his wife love DC, counting on hometown discount.
I too like Glendenning, can move up and down line up, good right handed face-off man and gritty.
Hathaway is also a SOB to play against. Good add for 4th line.
This is a much more responsible bottom 6, with some attitude for playoffs.

Really? Janmark except last season has outscored him. He is 4 years younger. Much higher potential. Potential top 6. All things Detroit needs. Caps need more cap space, better face off man in D zone and PK help. Both teams get what they need.

Caps should consider. Kadri and Zaitsev need a new team. Djoos and Eller are vanilla, talented but not difference makers. I like that Kadri hates to lose and Z needs less spotlight and a Russian friendly environment. He has size, skates well, in his prime, worth the gamble.

Take out Russell, Pulji, a 1st and a second and Minnesota should do it. Wild need to go young and rebuild. On the Oiler side that's pretty steep. Better, cheaper options to play with McDavid. Real problem is shedding bad contracts.
