That's what people said of Chiarot last year.
Now he is on the first pair. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

makes zero sense for Minnesota to do this.
- worse player

- makes the positional gap even worse

Hallelujah. Now we don’t have to deal with all of the ridiculous Brodin to Montreal trades.
Fair AAV. A little longer than you’d like, but that’s to be expected with contracts like these.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goavs141</b></div><div>Joel is not a 4/5 guy, i wouldnt play him as a 7th d man</div></div>
The St.Louis blues played him as a top 4 when they won the cup, and the Canes used him as a top 4 with one of the best d-cores in the league. I'll judge their opinions, thanks.

Now look at this:

Romanov-Petry
Edmundson-Fleury
Good luck to pass by 💪😅

Solid 4/5 guy that can kill penalties, play the body, and contribute to the offense once in a while. I like the pickup for Montreal. Let's see what the contract looks like

Any time you're getting something from a guy you've already decided to let go you become an instant winner.

New York Rangers signed Chris Kreider (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
This is probably the worst deadline day in recent Rangers memory. Could have gotten a 1st + prospect, instead we sign a guy who is ALREADY regressing. Excellent job Gorton, I'm sure you'll be buying him out in about three years' time. Kakko, Buchnevich, Gauthier, Kravtsov, Chytil all potential top-6 wingers - but we re-sign a regressing power forward who is already losing his scoring touch. A solid second half of the season doesn't count, before anyone says "he's been on fire lately." I've never smashed the "No" button on a CapFriendly poll so hard.

Bro he's coming off 12 + 29 + 33 point seasons .... the AVV is very high for a player of his caliber.
And Ottawa has been playing the s*** out of him this season to pump his trade value.
Enjoy.

Can't say I'm a fan of the deal.
9.2 Million for a guy who's not even a PPG player and it's signed until he's 37. Big Yikes from me.

(BUF/MTL) - Scandella for 2020 4th round pick (SJS)
So basically the overall trade is:
Give Up:
Mike Reilly
2020 4th SJS
Get:
Marco Scandella
2021 5th OTT
Andrew Sturtz
Montreal trades back a round in exchange for evening out which years they have their picks in and upgrading Reilly. Nice.

(MTL/OTT) - Reilly for Sturtz and 2021 5th round pick
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kotkaniemi15</b></div><div>Don’t know much about Sturtz, but a 5th is probably fair. I’m betting that the habs make a move after this, since I’m not convinced Christian Folin is an ideal 7th defenseman.
Good pick up for the Sens. While he has defensive deficiencies he can do well on the 3rd pairing for a young and fast non-playoff team like the Sens.
Edit: I called it. I knew they wouldn’t trade Reilly unless they had a better replacement.</div></div>
Sturtz was a college free agent signing. He was a great college player, and when he first came to Belleville he looked great. The next season he was unfortunately extremely unlucky with injuries and barely played.
Fast forward to this year and he's 25 and the Belleville Senators are just WAY too stacked up front for him to even crack the lineup. Hopefully he gets a better shot in Laval, but I wouldn't count on him ever playing NHL games.

(NJD/ARI) - Hall, Speers for Bahl, Merkley, Schnarr, 1sr round pick, conditional 3rd round pick
On one hand, it's better to get something for someone you know is leaving in the offseason than just letting them walk for nothing (ahem, Columbus). On the other hand, wtf Shero lol.

(STL/DET) - Fabbri for De La Rose
Fabbri didn't earn top six time and was a liability in the bottom six. DLR is a better option for 12-13th fwd. Blues probably went with DLR over a late pick so they can cover for injuries - looks like Steen could be out for a bit and he was playing on the shutdown 4th line.

(OTT/NYR) - Ebert for Namestnikov
Looks good for Sens at first but a 4th for a UFA that's probably not gonna sign after the season... I don't see a point in this. Rangers get cap space and 4th, extra body was to keep contract spots even. Team that might be last trades pick for rental in October... ok guess i just don't get it

this is a steal right now. at 22 years old and 8m AAV, he delivers more wins above replacement than:
ekblad (7.5 aav, 24)
spurgeon (7.5, 29)
letang (7.25, 32)
burns (8, 34)
and i could go on and on. he's going to get better, but he's already a steal for the money today

My understanding is that it was only compliance buyouts that had the one year rule. Regular buyouts can occur at any time and you can sign the player after if you want.
The reason it was one year with compliance buyouts is that they didn't want a team buying somebody out and signing them for cheap the next day.

Good minor trade. SJ get a veteran D; can be called up for depth. CAR get a RD, which they need, with small upside.

Similar to Shea Theodore, and John Klingberg. Banking on current cap space for eventual cap value. Relatively low risk from the team and high reward potential in the medium to long term.
