Damn, I guess Melnyk had a pretty good night at the casino to afford this.

this is exactly the kind of contract you want to sign your 22 year old star players to. melnyk has been dog**** with this team, but you can't blame dorion for not trying when he's cutting deals like this.

STEAL IN A FEW YEARS

this is a steal right now. at 22 years old and 8m AAV, he delivers more wins above replacement than:

ekblad (7.5 aav, 24)
spurgeon (7.5, 29)
letang (7.25, 32)
burns (8, 34)

and i could go on and on. he's going to get better, but he's already a steal for the money today

That is massive money to give to a player who's played about a season and a half's worth of games. That said, he is a very good young defenceman and locking him up 'til his age 31 season is great news for Sens fans.

Damn. One good year with high shooting % and 2nd assists gets him the ekblad deal? He is a fantastic young player but this is a huge bet by the sens. Hell the guy the deal is based off of hasn't even lived up to his contract yet so this is very risky.

That being said you have the entire prime of what is basically the sens version of Rielly locked up, so I think it will work out fine but geez is this ever an overpay right now.

If you're going to overpay someone, overpay youth to term and that is exactly what the Sens did so even though it is an overpay, I think this is a good deal for them.

Do you think that Ekblad actually deserves the money he gets?

Thomas Chabot is going to play his best years in Ottawa. That's the only thing I care about. We have him til he's 30.

no. That is why I said:
"Hell the guy the deal is based off of hasn't even lived up to his contract yet"

Which isn't to say he wont, just that he isn't there right now.

excellent contract if he breaks through and becomes an elite talent, good contract if he plateaus.

even though i hate the senators, this is great news for the team and fans.

Similar approach to when they signed Karlsson coming out of his ELC (7 years at about 10% of the cap). They have a good young defender locked up for perhaps a bit of an overpay now when the team is trash and it doesn't matter. With cap inflation and continued progression by the player, this will be a nice bargain contract for their #1D. What's most interesting to me is the player committing to the organization for 8 years after the tire fire the last couple of seasons have been.

Win win scenario! He’s overpaid now while they are in the gutter with a ton of cap and he’ll be a bargain the last 4 years if they ever get back to a competitive team. Note: I say competitive because they will never again be a true contender

Cap space has nothing to do with it. Melnyk has to be able to pay the player that kind of salary to begin with regardless of cap space.
