If I see another "the cap is going up it's fine" comment I'm gonna lose it. Teams will be up against the cap all over again because of these kind of overpays for fringe top 6 players.

Colorado Avalanche signed Nathan MacKinnon (8 Years / $12,600,000 AAV)
The Avs won the Cup in part because of MacKinnon's great contract. Before it was all about the team, this guy talked about taking a discount and look at what Makar did.
Now as their players turn into mercenaries their dynasty will end.

Ottawa Senators signed Tim Stützle (8 Years / $8,350,000 AAV)
Stu is going to be a great player for a long time, and now the Sens have him locked in for 8 years on a decent number.
I have no idea why the vote is split. This is a no-brainer yes.

High Risk, High Reward</div></div>
There's no risk in this deal. He scored 59 points as a 20 year old, which is better than 99% of players at that age.
He's going to be a star.

Montreal Canadiens signed Kirby Dach (4 Years / $3,362,500 AAV)
This gives him time to show he can be a top 6 player. If he's not, there's no risk to it as it's just 4 years long.

Vancouver Canucks signed J.T. Miller (7 Years / $8,000,000 AAV)
I voted yes because he's a star player, and 8 million for a star player isn't that bad. I would much rather have Miller than the typical fringe top 6 players with 5-6 million contracts.

I guess the price to move salary were too high for Lou..
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>I vote No because of the lack of information.
If it's front loaded and there isn't huge bonuses (aka easier buyout) then it would be a W.
But as is, IMO Calgary is signing excellents players in their prime that will start to decline. The back end of those contracts will stink, probably including Weegar who should be next (8x6.25M$?).</div></div>
The Flames window is now so it doesn't matter

I like the idea for sure. Logic would say the Wings have to get a strong second center sooner or later. But what do I know, the Blackhawks won 3 Cups with Toews and not much else at center,

The missing piece
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BStinson</b></div><div>Hertl is 28, I have no problem with using picks for players if they fit the age of the current core. People were recently talking about trading Larkin and Bertuzzi because of this and asset management is crucial in sustained success. Another factor is when do you think Hertl is going to regress? If you own his rights I’m sure his team is going to bat for an 8 year deal putting him around 36. Most likely you’ll see one of Hertl, Trocheck, or Copp testing the market.</div></div>
Larkin and Bertuzzi will be free agents soon as well. If you don't improve the team and miss the playoffs again those guys could walk and you're setting yourself back another 2-3 years.

Actually because he is a UFA you can trade for him for much cheaper than you normally would. When a strong center like this is available you have to get him. Betting on getting him in UFA is too risky.

There are many other teams that will want the player. If you can get him with an extension like Vegas did with Stone it's worth it.

The missing piece
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BStinson</b></div><div>I think he’d be a great fit but don’t love the price. Detroit is projected 13th overall and I’d wager it drops in that 8-11 range. Most teams acquiring him would be playoff teams and they add a decent prospect to their first. So value wise I think it’s close but slight overpay and I really don’t want to move that first.</div></div>
Keeping your picks is great in theory, but if you can use them to add a core player you need why not do it.
