Good for Swayman but not the greatest for the Bruins

I think it's best to avoid handing out long term contracts to goalies, especially when they're still rfa. Great signing.

One two punch of Charlie Coyle and Paval Zacha, Bs got 400k with a dream man, It's going to be very interesting this year, wouldn't be surprised if they set a new record from biggest win gap in the span of 2 seasons.

Good signing at a reasonable amount, and he's till a RFA upon expiry. Now we can stop seeing those Ullmark and Swayman trade proposals on CF.

@GuyGuyGuy what was that about the arbitrator giving Sway 4.5M?

Anyway, solid deal for a 1B. Probably the last season we see Ullmark and Swayman together.

Goalies are tough to evaluate. Their numbers are impacted by the team. Now that the Bruins look to get worse his numbers could nosedive. I would trade him while his value is high.

Probably to keep the aav down on a cap limited BOS team.

You are probably looking at a deal similar to Knight or Oettinger if there is some term, which BOS can’t really afford this season.

Cap takes a big jump next year and if Swayman has another strong season he'd likely get a big long term deal from Boston who'd then trade Ullmark who will have 1yr left.

This is a good contract for the team in a vacuum; however, I'm not sure Boston can afford this much on their backup, even a 1b.

Come on people. It's a one year deal because it got settled in arbitration and the vast majority of players chose a 1 year deal.

Since it was player elected, was it the team option to make it a 2 years term

This was an arbitration award, so it's not necessarily what the team wanted. Arbitration awards are usually for only one year, so the player can force the team (or vice versa) to accept a short term if he doesn't want to sign for more. That's how we end up with situations like Debrincat and Dubois. To get a longer term, both parties have to agree before the arbitration hearing.

The good thing for Boston is that he's still a RFA at the end of it, unlike Samsonov who got a similar amount but will be a UFA when it expires (assuming he doesn't sign an extension first). That should make Swayman very tradeable if Boston thinks he'll be a luxury in 2024-25.

CapFriendly should identify which contracts are arbitration awards as opposed to an actual agreement between the player and team. They say "ARBITRATION: This contract was signed following an arbitration filing", but they say the same thing if they sign between the filing date and the hearing.

The term is picked by the team since it was player elected arbitration.

I get that JS was a 1B on a historically good team that valued team defense but.... T. Jarry got 5 x 5.475... not saying he should have signed for 5 years but 3.475 is rough. Boston probably could not afford anymore even if they wanted to but JS is worth more than 3.475.

I wonder if the 1 year term is sort of like a peace offering? I really think the Bruins view him as the goalie of the future, so going to arbitration was not ideal.

"Hey, we really wanted to pay you, but we couldn't because of our cap issues. Sorry we had to go through that process. How about next year we do things right by you? No hard feelings?"

Other than that, I've got nothing.

That sounds like a plausible scenario to me. The Bergeron and Krejci bonuses that cut into their cap space this coming season won't be there in 2024-25 (with the possible exception of another bonus-laden contract for Krejci for this season), and the cap is supposed to go up. Another option would have been to sign Swayman longer term and trade Ullmark, but this way they can keep them both for at least one more season.
