I’ll take it as Rangers fan that you do not watch many Lightning games outside of the ones versus NY, but you will find many Lightning fans in agreement with my point. Sure go ahead with your franchise center statement, but it’s simply untrue about the current Stamkos, he’s a passenger now and he doesn’t do well when it matters. Point’s all around game is far better, which is why he is more important to the Lightning than Stamkos.

Yes, I was accounting for 1 of Raddysh/Joseph going in the trade and assuming Sergachev was in it as well. I was thinking Sergachev+Gourde+Raddysh+Dotchin+2020 1st, but that may even be too much. Would still have a couple of guys with high enough potential to crack the top-6 and more than enough to fill out the bottom-6, so it is very doable. I don't think Callahan will cost more than a decent pick/prospect combo, don't think it will require any huge prospects, since his real salary is less than the cap hit and the team absorbing it would have the cap space easily.

No cap for Karlsson
It's doable but not easily. A Callahan buyout/trade next year would save at least 3.133M and Miller will be traded at the draft before his limited NTC kicks in which is another 5.25M, so that moves the space to about $24.852M with your ceiling. Joseph/Volkov/Raddysh will be ready at RW by then, and will combine for less than $2M together. AT LW you will have Katchouk by then and that's under 1M. So that's now about $21.8M to work with, with 14 players. Koekkoek or Masin as the third pairing LD will be at or below 1M, so that's $20.8M with 15 players. Cernak will probably be ready as the third pairing RD at under 1M by then as well, so that's now $19.8M with 16 players. I think they may be patient with Foote and re-sign Stralman as well, so that's probably at least 4.5M which would put it at $15.3M with 17 players. Put Karlsson at 10M and that brings it down to $5.3M with 18 players signed. Point on the Kucherov bridge of 4.8M brings it down to only $0.5M with 19 players signed. If they dump the full Callahan contract that adds another 2.667M and I left about 1M of fluff in there, so that brings the space up to $4.167M for the remaining 4C, 4LW, and 7D. I may have made a mistake somewhere in there, but I think the math is close enough. It would no doubt require the cap to take some jumps, and the drafting and ELCs would have to keep on working out. It will be interesting no matter what happens.

Going for Karlsson
The no-go for management at the deadline was reported to be Foote, so I doubt they would change their stance now. If they can throw in a mid-first (acquired from a Johnson or Miller trade) and take out the 3rds and Foote, I think it might work.

You don't get elite players for scraps, and this trade is assuming he would want to come here and extend. Gourde could probably be removed and it would still be fair, but I tend to lean towards doing more than less, just to have a different look than most of the severe underpayments on this site. Johnson would be helpful to move for cap purposes and Miller is not a core (or important enough) piece to give the kind of contract he will be looking for probably. Don't kid yourself about Koekkoek and Dotchin, they are popcorn servers, but Koekkoek may have slightly more value due to draft pedigree.

Retool with CGY and TBL
Don't see Yzerman doing that to Johnson after giving him that long term deal, although I do think he will be moved to a team where he can compete, and I think someone like Dallas may be a fit. Foote was apparently a no-go before, so I doubt that has changed much. It would be nice to move Girardi's cap, but he's not waiving to go to a team in a bad spot, and he would also be sacrificing money in the process. Say the Lightning could get two mid 1sts and also offer you a cost-controllable D (like Koekkoek or Dotchin) as well as add maybe a forward prospect and a conditional second. Would something hypothetical like that work?
- 2018 1st Round Pick (DAL)
- 2018 1st Round Pick (COL)
- Slater Koekkoek / Jake Dotchin
- Taylor Raddysh
- Conditional 2018 2nd Round Pick (becomes 1st in 2020 if TBL wins the Cup)

Yeah, I always try to at least make sure it's at least not an underpayment when doing a trade, just to be a bit more realistic than some of the stuff you see. My thinking was that Columbus gets two LW/C in depth for an elite LW like Panarin, which might at least get their attention, and then also get controllable assets with the #13 pick and LD depth (RFA Koekkoek) to maybe make them lean towards yes.

I am not sure that Callahan would waive his NTC for Ottawa, and since he's re-injured something again I would not be surprised to see LTIR be his new roster spot, but his cap can work out this season regardless. The Ryan contract the next offseason will be tricky because of the Vasilevskiy and Sergachev extensions.

Two Trades - Rasmus and a 1st
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cberg</b></div><div>From the Flames perspective, I would say Johnson "better" than Bennet, and Anderson "much better" than Dotchin, so with the pick upgrade the trade proposal is in the ballpark. Even so, I am not sure I would do the trade even though it addresses the Flames' need for a right shot forward. Bennet's style likely to be a much better fit with the new coach (and playoffs), and both he and Anderson still have significant potential to grow to their ceilings, so Tampa gets all the upside, with little upside potential for Calgary. To me, all things considered Bennett and Johnson are a saw-off, and losing Anderson is a big loss for Calgary. The pick upgrade is marginal in reality, considering the likelihood that either end up NHLers 2-3 years down the road.
If you substituted someone like Taylor Raddysh (young RW that Calgary needs) instead of Dotchin, and dropped the pick exchange, then there would be something to seriously talk about.</div></div>
I think that would be fair.

Yeah it would probably have to be slightly more, but I don’t see Yzerman going that high. The COL trade thinking was just so they keep something for a pick, even if it is a late rounder. I think Miller can/will fetch a mid-late first rounder, as I do not see him fitting into the cap plans.

Could a framework of Johnson and Simmonds work, or is Wayne too much of a fit there to entertain that kind of a deal? Tampa Bay would have to be able to agree to a reasonable extension with him as part of the trade though.

I may actually die if that extension is given to McDonagh, or any at all for that matter. At this point he should serve as nothing more than another year of shelter for Sergachev to progress, otherwise they should try to possibly recoup some assets if they feel more negatively about his fit.

Shaking It Up - Too Many Trade Ideas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jccamps18</b></div><div>If the Lighting are hitting the #panicbutton, what are most of the other teams in the NHL doing?
I'm not sure how you could say Cooper is getting outcoached, but usually head coaches receive the blame and he's the kind of coach that would put the blame on himself.
At the end of the day, TB was one of the last 4 teams left in the NHL, and lost in a game 7 against a good WSH team who had a hot goalie in games 6 and 7. At some point, you agree that TB was easily good enough to win the cup, they just lost a series too another good team. They have a loaded roster, a great prospect pool, and have somehow still managed to keep the cap under control. I feel like TB has nothing to panic about.</div></div>
I do believe there is a strong core in place with Hedman, Kucherov, and Stamkos; and you can probably also add Point, Vasilevskiy, and Sergachev to that list as well. With Cooper he is just not good at adjustments especially in-game, unless something falls into his lap like the triplets did, and then he rides it to the end. Not sure how he worked it into his head that Kucherov and Stamkos are inseparable, but at points they were a detriment to the team together, yet he would not yield. I am no saying it is all his fault though, as obviously the players have to want to play. Bowness runs the defense and penalty kill, and I think even the casual Lightning watcher can see they are schematically atrocious quite often. There is no doubt the talent is there and there is no doubt the prospect pool is good too, but I have to think something small will be changed. That could be firing Bowness and that could be trading a non-core someone out of the top-9. I don't know, but I hope they make at least one move just as a wake up call if nothing more, because there definitely seems to be some complacency now with this roster. I had us losing to Boston just because of history, so I was surprised when we took it to game 7 in the ECF against Washington, especially with how the team played at times in front of Vasilevskiy.

I take it you don’t watch the Lightning much, but nonetheless I will bite. I mean outside of laying the blame solely on Cooper being out coached, which has become a disturbing trend, there seems to be something missing on the roster. Stamkos disappears in big games, although I am betting he was injured again this playoffs. We don’t want to become the Sharks of the East, constantly falling short when it matters most, but hey maybe we already are? No panic here, just ideas that I know are a little too out there for our management.
