Chicago Blackhawks fans- What do you think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Why would Markstrom's UFA rights be worth more then Hayes? Rights just allow you to sign for 8 years instead of 7, and talking to his agent like a week ahead of FA. No ones offering Markstrom 8 years</div></div>
This trade doesn't allow Chicago to sign Markstrom to an eight-year deal; it's mainly to give Chicago extra time with Markstrom and his agent to show that they're very interested in signing him and want to work on a contract. They're essentially trading for an additional negotiation period.

Didn't really think about that, but it's the most ideal option. Arizona (or rather Houston) wouldn't shag scheduling in the Central and Miami/Quebec are in the same time zone.

My playoff lines against EDM
I like it; The Keith-Murphy pair is the only pair where Keith managed to net a positive xG all year. I'd honestly rather see Mitchell with De Haan instead of Boqvist, just because Mitchell is more aggressive and a more complete defenseman <em>right now</em>.

If you throw out the games Strome played out on the wing, he's a statistically-sound, point-per-game 2C. I feel like that should be able to fetch #15, no matter how deep a draft is.

Maybe I’m wrong about Koekkoek but I just want to see him succeed so badly. There’s a lot to like there and that 1st round pick label makes him all the more appealing. Yzerman of all people had enough confidence to take him 10th overall, there’s gotta be something more in there!</div></div>
I feel like he's already succeeding, but he needs the contract to go with it. If I were CHI, I'd go for a cheap one-year deal to get through the expansion draft and then sign him to the cap hit of whomever got selected (someone like De Haan/Maatta).

Koekkoek proved he's a top-four defenseman this season IMO. He's always been a statistically good defenseman, but he was the possession driver for the only good pair in CHI this year (Maatta - Koekkoek) with a much better sample size. I wanted to concur with one of your Koekkoek posts earlier this week, but you deleted it before I could say anything.

What’d you guys think?</div></div>
Pittsburgh runs a better powerplay, but Chicago runs a better penalty kill; special teams: wash.
The Penguin's group is faster, but Chicago has a better two-way presence throughout their lineup; 5-on-5 play: Chicago
Luck/huge moments are everything in a playoff series, and Pittsburgh managed to manufacture luck better than Chicago, which I've always related to the speed of their group; luck and bounces: Pittsburgh
But ultimately, Pittsburgh would win the series because of prime Fleury (watching more recent Vegas playoff series reminded me of that). Sometimes you just can't beat that; goaltending: Pittsburgh

Sounds about right. The only thing that would make me pause with the whole trade is the in-division factor; it would depend on if CHI envisions themselves bluntly rebuilding, which Bowman seems non-committal as of right now.

Edit* even with $1m/yr retained it wouldn't change those number much.</div></div>
So it's a static cap benefit amount, regardless of the date of retirement. Woof.

Yup. I agree with your first notion though, that FLA/Keith would verbally agree to go on LTIR. Luongo retired because he wanted to stay in FLA post-career and have a higher-level job within the Panther's organization; Keith would likely return to CHI post-career and wouldn't mind technically staying on LTIR.

***EDIT*** I really do think you're on to something with Pius Suter too. I'm going to make sure you get all the credit for bringing this to capfriendly.</div></div>
I calculated the recapture penalties that CHI would face if Keith retired:
1.) If he retired the minute he got traded to FLA (20-21 season): <strong>$3,455,129 AAV for three years</strong>
2.) If he retired after his first year in FLA (21-22 season): <strong>$5,182,694 AAV for two years</strong>
3.) If he retired in the last year of his contract (22-23 season): <strong>$10,365,387 AAV for one year</strong>

I don't think he'd retire before his contract is up; FLA is a team that's <em>supposed</em> to be on the upswing, and coupling that with Quenneville as the coach, I don't think Keith would bail.

I agree with keeping Strome; this was just for a hypothetical return. As for Kubalik, I tried to get as close to his UFA status as possible with a 3-year contract (which would likely increase the AAV).
