I think the value's good, but I don't like trading Schenn either. I'd offer Poolman instead and retain 50% on Miller. Wanted to keep the trade as proposed though.

Boston FO loves Carlo. They are not moving him for 1 year of a 30 year old who will need an extension that won’t be a good one. They will be signing Bergy and possibly Krejci for 1 year so they don’t need to address C til next year. They can see if JT hits FA and sign him without giving up anything. If he signs before than, oh well, other options.
To pry Carlo out of Boston it will take a center entering his prime or barely into it. Think Elias or Bo with an extension. Van is not doing that anymore than Boston is trading Carlo for a center in his 30s that needs a contract. Especially with Pasta needing a 9m contract .</div></div>
Yeah that all makes sense. Didn't know McAvoy was hurt.

Fair enough. As a non-Bruins fan, can I ask why? You've got McAvoy as your #1 RHD, and need a 1C or 2C whether or not Bergeron re-signs. What am I missing?

I don't really get why Canucks fans have given up on Hoglander so easily. His current trade value is way below his actual potential, moving him now would be a mistake IMO.

Keeping JT - part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kingkanuck</b></div><div>Why would the Canucks want a 33-37 year old forward eaning $7.5M/yr?
What makes you think Miller wants to extend or take a discount? He can likely get more money, sufficient term AND move closer to wherever he calls home if he just plays out his contract and becomes a UFA.
They need to move him if they want to be better in the future, and they will need the cap space.
The Canucks and Miller seem to have overestimated his value or he would already be gone.</div></div>
I'm not convinced keeping him is the best move either. But it seems like the team is leaning that way and I agree with them that trading him for pennies is a mistake. If we do keep him, this is what I'd like to see, and I don't think it's completely unrealistic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Logan_Ollivier</b></div><div>You definitely need to do something about that defence. The right side is terrible</div></div>
For now, it's not ideal, no. The Hughes-Schenn pairing did alright this season though, and OEL-Lyubushkin were mostly solid in Arizona. We're stuck with Myers, but he should be somewhat effective on a sheltered third pairing. Nemec gives us our RD of the future, whether he plays with Quinn or on the second pair. We're not going to contend next season anyways, and I think this D is at least good enough not to singlehandedly tank our playoff chances.

Could definitely see Suzuki making it. I tried to account for players falling off (no Bergeron, Petro, etc.), but I think most of the forwards here will still be in their primes come 2024. Completely forgot about Power, fixing that now.

Disagree with your assessment of Boeser, but everything else makes sense. I put this specific deal down because Marino to VAN was rumoured a week ago, but Boeser for a top-four RHD is really the gist of it. I'd definitely see us adding picks in this specific case, too. Are you guys not going to re-sign Letang? I figured that was the plan and so Marino might be the odd man out.

If Motte is willing to re-sign then absolutely do that, just figured we'd have done that already if he was. Only reason I added a 1st is cause Dumba is a UFA soon while Boeser is still an RFA, could maybe make it a conditional pick based on if Dumba re-signs.

Bona-fide top-pairing RHDs are hard to come by, so I'd say yes, Hamilton is absolutely worth 9 million. I don't love the 8 year term but I'd probably still do it, tbh.
We do not need Barrie, and while I really hope we stay far away from him, knowing Benning he'll probably end up signing him for 8x8 with a NMC.

Canucks haven’t proved themselves a winning team all year.</div></div>
That's fair. I originally was gonna give him 5x9 and trade Virtanen but i figured with the flat cap maybe we could get him for 8. I'd sign him at 5x9 if that's what it took though.

Yeah I watched him quite a bit on the Leafs (live in the GTA) so I get where you're coming from. He didn't look bad in the few games he played for us pre-outbreak and he has (or at least had) a good amount of potential. I wouldn't completely give up on him yet.

It's not ideal, but this isn't the NBA. Star players rarely leave their teams in FA unless they're in a truly crappy situation. These deals put us in a position to contend before either hit UFA, which should mean we won't have trouble retaining them.

Markstrom and Holtby would be cheaper but they'll be at the tail end of their primes by the time the Wings are ready to compete. Detroit's going to be really bad for another couple years, taking on bad contracts is 100% worth getting one of the best goalie prospects in hockey, IMO.
