Will the pens make the playoffs
it will be tougher next year than in some years with the division improving, NJ(who the pens had trouble with anyway) and NYR are both much much better. Carolina is still up and coming, The caps will still be good, the Islanders shocked everyone last year and could be decent/good again this year. Flyers should be a bit better than last year. Only one that will be much worse on paper is the Blue jackets. You got legitimately 6 teams competing for likely 4 or MAYBE 5 spots.
Meanwhile they have themselves gotten slightly worse(downgrade trading away Kessel and Maatta)
I think Pens still finish above the rangers, devils, flyers, and blue jackets. Which means they should get in(one of the top four teams), but not as easily as usual.

(PIT/ARI) - Kessel, Birks, 2021 4th for Galchenyuk, Joseph
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>Is Kessel better though? He put up 10 more points than Domi playing with Crosby and Kessel. He played winger and his defensive game is non-existant. I wouldn't say that statement so easily.</div></div>
Kessel didn't really play on a line with Crosby other than the PP. Prior to last year he actually didn't play with Malkin that much on 5v5 either. He is bad defensively in general, not that domi is a shutdown defensive guy but he is miles better than Kessel defensively. Overall kessel is the better player, not by a massive gap, but he is better.

the question isn't in 10 years, right now Kessel is obviously the better player. In 5-10 years Domi will obviously better(kessel probably wont be in the league unless he pulls a Jagr)

(PIT/ARI) - Kessel, Birks, 2021 4th for Galchenyuk, Joseph
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>krakowitz</b></div><div>This is a great deal for both sides.
Kessel is reunited with Tocchet. and the Yotes get the raw skill that they need in their lineup. Kessel will be improving the PP and 5v5 scoring, as well as helping players like Keller and Schmaltz improve. He's exactly the type of player the Coyotes need and will be a big boost to their playoff push this year.
Galchenyuk didn't really do a lot to drive play for the Yotes, but he doesn't have to do that in Pittsburgh. He can be a passenger and let Geno drive the play, and really let his shot be his best weapon. It wasn't able to be utilized that well with the Coyotes. PO is a solid prospect, instantly their best D in the pipeline. That's not saying much, but it's something that they needed in their system.
I give the edge to the Coyotes because they got the best player in the deal, but it works out for both, especially with Pittsburgh getting much needed cap relief of almost $3M.</div></div>
better check your numbers there, they got under 2mil in cap relief. The rest is a reasonable take though.

Arizona is big winner in the short term, depending on how Joseph turns out could be a fair deal in the long run. But the penguins are notably worse for the next two years because of this deal.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>biglite351</b></div><div>I'm not a fan of his so its a rough call. i think last year was more the fluke than his future path...
I could go Bjugstad or Maatta plus a little something. No salary retention. Bjugstad and Athanasiou aren't that far apart offensively. Bjugstad is no Selke-guy at all but is better defensively. Bjugstad is considerably more physical (Athanasiou is near Kessel levels of physicality). Bjugstad and a 3rd or a 2nd if pushed. For argument sake, I'll go Bjugstad and a 2nd. Bjugstad being the better all-around player but the 2nd being to offset for the "potential" and the cap difference.
$2 and "potential" will get you a cup of coffee at Get-Go.
But I am fine with just having Bjugstad.</div></div>
I would do Bjugstad and a 3rd for him, (no retention…) anymore than that and I pass.

not even close to correct. Kessel makes over 2million less and is over a ppg player. Not to mention for a team that has a strong defense already, could use help on the forward side of things, and had lots of trouble with the pp. If you don't think that would be a great trade for them, that's fine. But horrible?? that's utter nonsense.

he put up over 90 points two years ago, and over 80 points last year. He is still very productive, and his cap hit is actually lower now than it was before the previous trade(Toronto retained salary a million per year). While I don't think necessarily get MORE than got for him 4 years ago. Should get similar value though.

Ill be completely honest, im not very aware of trenin or birks. Which could be what decides if Id do the trade or not. Blandisi and Lettieri aren't any major piece in that so that's somewhat of a wash to me.

IF it must happen
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PenGoater99</b></div><div>1. Maatta's value isn't that high according to Elliotte Freidman, the Pens have tried to move him before and nothing has materialized, I really doubt Montreal even thinks about something like this even though it addresses a need for them.
2. Gudbranson played well down the stretch, yes, but that was a very small sample size, there's a very low chance he plays like that for an extended amount of time, it comes down to moving money at that point
3. In this scenario, Malkin is traded to Florida under the assumption they miss out on Panarin and Bobrovsky. He would give them arguably the best top 6 in the league
3a. It will be hard to get more than that for Kessel, even though his cap hit and production are attractive, his age is a big detractor
3b. Similar case to Kessel. Name is a selling point, but age is a risk. This deal is about what the Pens should expect in any potential deal, a replacement, another roster player a 1st and another piece</div></div>
1. Im highly skeptical of that. They should easily be able trade him for at minimum a third but likely more. While he is most likely to be traded they don't necessarily need to trade him.
2. That is a terrible argument smh. So he played well but better dump him fast is your logic? If they just wanted to move him for the sake of moving him they could get a draft pick for him WITHOUT ANY retention. If you really wanted to move money retention would be a nonstarter. Take out the pick sending out and taking out the retention, so its just gudbranson for a mid/late round pick then it would be more reasonable. They don't need to add any sweeteners into the deal.
3. Ok In that case If they do miss out in free agency I could see them highly interested in Malkin. But that means any possible trade likely wouldn't be til after the draft. Which means picks couldn't be 2019 ones.
3a and 3b any team that wants to win right now really doesn't care that much about age although it is one factor. The penguins don't really need to trade either one so if they don't get a better package than these they should simply say no. If the Arizona pick was a top 5 or 6 pick I would be fine with that deal. But it will only be a handful in front of the penguins own pick so they should need to add. Floridas pick also isn't that high(plus as established above, if they miss out on free agency the trade would be involving 2020 picks, and their pick is likely to be even worse if they add big to their current roster) and while Trocheck is a very good player, Malkin is a generational type player. These trades are a good start but would need to both add a bit. These are closer than most of the trades on here at least.

Thread:
IF it must happen
1. you are immensely undervaluing Maatta. He is worth a second on his own.
2. You are overblowing the Gudbranson contract, they don't need to do a terrible trade like that. He actually played well after they traded for him. They aren't gonna give up assets to get rid of him, and they sure as heck aren't gonna retain on it.
3. Im not in favor of trading kessel or geno, but IF it were to happen, Arizona would be a reasonable destination for Phil. Florida doesn't make as much sense however, if they want to sign both Panarin and Bob, and take on a net of 5million in acquiring malkin, they would have to unload several other pieces to get under the cap.
3a. As for the fairness of the deals. I think you need to get a bit more for Kessel although that's in the relative ballpark.
3b. While I like Trocheck you need to get more in any deal that moves malkin away.
