Meier to MTL Blockbuster Rakell to SJ and Haula and Rutta Signings
Meier is gonna get a 10m plus qualifying offer in a couple years, which isn't going to work with the Hab's cap structure. Sorry!

Searching the market
The reasoning behind all this is that the Habs are unlikely to resign Tatar, Bryon is slowing down and Poehling is a C who might play LW, but didn't get a lick of play off time because of conditioning issues. Where he plays - if he plays in the show - is a mystery.
As such, the Hab's LW depth after this season is Drouin-Toffoli (if he plays his off wing) - Lekhoken, or perhaps just Drouin-Lekhoken if the Anderson experiment doesn't pan out and Toffoli plays RW.
That's not great depth. And there's no one beyond Poehling in the prospect pool who looks like they're NHL caliber talent.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>"why lehtonen"WATCH THREAD.
To quote Blutto in Animal House, when he gave the Delta name to new pledge, Flounder, "Why not?"
Leafs appear to lots of LHD of NHL calibre, but are short of depth at LHD with the Marlies, which will probably be the destination of two of Rosen, Marincin and Lehtonen.</div></div>
So in other words, a cap friendly signing that frees up a trade asset if need be and you deny his services to your rivals.
Why not indeed?

because the Habs will need to win a fair chunk of those 37 to get to the playoffs next year and Cayden is inexperienced and might struggle with that kind of workload at this point?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Wow, though Allen might be good, to take on his 4.3m contract seems steep especially for two years for the Habs. Think I team like the Wings, with cap and a goalie need for two years may take him...but with no asset being traded to Blues, who will happy getting the cap space.</div></div>
Price is getting old and needs a reliable backup. They've been cycling through crap cheap options for years now and what happens? Keith Niemi-kad gets lit up and Price has more starts than any other 1A goalie until his knees/groin give up. Meanwhile the Habs have a ton of cap space they're not using. Why not pay top dollar so they can have a fresh-ish Price for the games that really matter?
Okay, I am overpaying in my ACGM post but I think there is logic to this idea.

That I think might be their plan B. There is some merit to letting Cayden get another year as an AHL starter rather than having him riding the pine for 60-65 games a year.

Big trade with Habs
It's a novel idea, but I can't see those two teams ever doing a blockbuster and I'm not sure Petry is really and truly the 1D defender the Leafs need. Plus the Habs won't trade him because if Weber goes down, they are well and truly screwed on RHD.

It's only a 1st if he resigns. Otherwise it's a second. Perlini and Weal cancelling each other out, it's a prospect and a second for a rental, which seems like decent market value.

The Hawks could draft a player with the 2020 2nd Round Draft Pick, and then sign Gustafsson in August (still prior to the 2020-2021 season). Because they already made their pick, there would be no draft pick to transfer. Make it a 2021 2nd Round Draft Pick instead, and the pick conditions are possible.</div></div>
I have had a long day already and that was a stupid mistake on my part. Thanks for catching it. I'll edit the post after I hit the coffee machine up.

Ghost value seems lower than I expect
I think that if Ghost and Shaw are at the heart of a trade, it's the Habs that add. I would suggest a prospect and the better of our two second rounders.
Shaw has some value, Ghost has more. Habs need to make a trade like this, Philly is likely less pressured.
A package might well be Shaw, 2nd round pick 2019, non top 5 prospect (top 5 being Suzuki, Poehling, Romanov, Primeau, Brook). I would also be willing to look at 2020 picks depending on how well Shaw plays (60 games plus and 15 goals plus) and the Habs don't give up a 2020 3rd. So call it Shaw, 46 OA, Cale Fleury or Jake Evans, and a 2020 pick.
I had understood the rumour to be Shaw or Bryon, not both, for the record. If the Flyers want both, then our best second round pick would be appropriate.

Oil fans fair value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryryguy4</b></div><div>i think the oilers decline. trading down from 8 to 15 alone should be enough. Jones had a really good year and is slated to start on the bottom pairing this year. The oilers really like his mobility. i get armia is there but i suspect they could dump lucic for just a pick swap. there plan is most likely to trade a bad contract for a bad contract though</div></div>
One of the impressions I get from the Oil is that they have more top prospects on LHD than RHD, so the idea was to even it out a little.

That's the idea. Imagine Bergy walks out of the draft with Broberg or Caufield and a guy who could legit play top 4, top 2 LHD who's almost NHL ready.
This is probably a draft floor deal depending on availability, but imagine in 2020-2021 that Hague, Romanov, Broberg, Mete and Kulak are available to you.

The cheapest figure I’ve seen quoted for Marner anywhere on a long term deal starts with a 9. I mean, I’m sure the people on this forum are all world class experts and all, but the only way Marner signs for less than 10 is on a bridge “get me to UFA so I can get the hell out” deal.

I understand Brodie has played LHD before but Karlsson has not. Plus Karlsson would cost 10m easily and Brodie is half that so we can still afford a Duchene, Nyquist, etc.

Dream Roster

News report today from an Ottawa area newspaper claiming that Karlsson hopes that the Sens and the Habs make competitive offers for his services b/c his wife is homesick for the Ottawa area. Apparently if he plays for either team he can get her back to where she wants to be. I think most people who are speculating are saying the Habs because EK going back to Melynk seems like a real stretch.
I guess a lot depends on how you define "competitive?"
