Why would any rebuilding team ever acquire Nylander going into his UFA year.

1) I call BS on your Toronto is equal on defense BS.
Last season: regular season
total defense rankings (Car #2 vs Tor #7), GAPG (Car 2.56 vs Tor 2.68), shots against per game (SAPG) (Car 26.00 vs Tor 29.51), PK% (Car 84.38 vs Tor 81.85).
Now look when it really matters:
Playoff defense rankings GAPG (Car 2.53 vs Tor 3.18), SAPG (Car 28.87 vs Tor 31.82) , PK % (Car 84.09% vs Tor 73.33%)
Toronto let in 21 in the 1st round (vs CAR's 15) , 15 in the 2nd round (vs CAR's 14 with 8 of those coming in a bad loss), and then 10 in the conference finals. You as a Leafs fan must be confused about the fact there is a round that follows the 2nd round of the playoffs--I assure you there is.
Show me a Maple Leaf that got Norris votes last year. I can show you two Hurricanes: Burns and Slavin. Go ahead tell me how Slavin is an offensive juggernaut.
So what did the Hurricanes do to improve their outstanding defense (of Burns, Slavin, Pesce, Skjei, and Chatfield--well, they signed <strong>Dmitry Orlov</strong> from the Bruins (the only defense ranked higher than them last year) and then reacquired a d-man that was +30 and put up 51 points with them the year before on a 1 year prove it contract (<strong>Anthony Deangelo</strong>).
...but yeah keep telling me their equal and a goalie will jump ship to make the same amount of money when the cap is going up in July of 2024.

Disagree--along with the GM's in the league since the Pens are actively trying to give him away so they can get Karlsson and there haven't been takers.

Is Petry better than Chiarot? Not at his age now. He’s in massive decline. 36 yrs old in Dec vs 32 yrs old until May ‘24.
Certainly not when 6.25M vs 4.75M is considered
And you want the Wings to pay for the trade with a draft pick. They wouldn’t do it straight up.

They aren’t buying out Chiarot. You do know he can play RHD. Maybe you haven’t seen Holl play yet.
Ehlers trade seems rich as he’s a 1.5 year rental. His size given the Wings current lack of it at forward makes him an unlikely target.
And the Ras deal seems light.

Contract values are a joke.
Have a RFA going to play on the 1st pair but getting less than 2M.
Have a 35 year old goalie taking 1.5M (the same salary as this year) when the cap is going upwards and he’s going from a team that plays defense to an AHL defensive roster.
…and that defense will get destroyed in the playoffs.
…but that’s okay since we want Florida!

Best Team In Hockey
Your 1st line will get pushed out to the blue line by any team with defensive size. It'll be like picking cherries for their goalie.
Your 2nd line is not much bigger. Given the trend of defensive size for physical d-men you're giving it up as Karlsson doesn't play a physical game (he gets hurt when he does), Deangelo is more skill than size, and Burns is approaching 80 (given his wear). Karlsson and Burns on the same team was tried before--it doesn't end up well.

Thought Provoking
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>That Compher deal is awful, I'm sorry to Wings fans that they are gonna have to struggle with that one. He's a 30 point player unless he plays with elite talent</div></div>
The actual contract is not all that awful considering the cap is expected to rise 10M from '24-'25 to '27-'28. Compher's game is also 200 feet so he doesn't just need to score to stay useful. Plus Detroit still has $10M in cap space with a roster size of 24--it's not like he is holding them back from making other moves.
Detroit's strength is it's middle 6 forwards. It's weakness is its top end talent (particularly 1st line wingers where Raymond is still developing but the other side is lacking). Compher will be playing with top 6 type talent (not elite) but better than average (pick 2 of Rassmussen, Perron, Fabbri, Kubalik, Copp, maybe Berggren, and eventually 2022 1st rounder #8 Marco Kasper). So if he adds 20 goals to the team that can still make a large difference as there should be a lot more scoring balance in the future.
With $37M plus whatever the cap goes up next year, the talent surrounding him could get even better. Plus, Detroit has many, many prospects that will be coming up on ELC deals (and multiple 2024 1st round picks) meaning they can go out and add expensive talent (via trade or UFA) and get even better. It's the natural cycle when the team has been awful for the past 7 years.

Veleno's only 23 yrs old and seems like a quality 4th line centre/useful 3rd line centre. He doesn't even have arbitration rights until '24-25. Much, much more likely Zadina is gone before him. So where is he?
Similarly, Husso is 28 yrs old with a Feb birthday. Even 5 years from now he's still backup goalie age. I wouldn't count on him being elsewhere if he can maintain the growth.
You're way overvaluing Buchelnikov and way undervaluing Rasmussen.
Edvinsson should be ahead of William Wallinder at this point...and probably for future projections too.

One final touch
I think you have to swap out Fabbri and Rasmussen, then Veleno for Berggren in the trade. But given Ras' age and closer proximity to UFA: you may be right.
Soderblom is not making the team as he's waiver exempt and they will want to over ripen him in the AHL. That's Fischer's spot.
Gostisbehere ('s preference is that he) plays RHD. Chiarot's preference is that he plays LHD. So I think your 2nd and 3rd pairings are wrong. Holl must be buried on that 3rd pair at all costs until he is properly wiped from Toronto's poor coaching. So I see it as 2nd pair Chiarot and Gostisbehere. 3rd pair Maatta and Holl. Spare Lindstrom.
It does seem as a 1st line winger is coming via trade--but with DeBrincat's list of 5 teams he would re-sign with (and the fact Nashville and Dallas used up their cap space) and Florida's (lack of it). Yzerman may not want to give up assets and just re-visit signing him as an UFA next summer.

Bros on yzerplan b
The whole point of signing Copp and Compher is that it gives the organization time to over ripen Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson (what Yzerman believes in). So right away Kasper is in the AHL.
You're missing Veleno (a RFA with no arbitration rights) so it's a cheap signing that will get done before long.
You're missing Christian Fischer who signed with Detroit (per Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports). He'll be a 4th liner opposite Kostin with Veleno at centre.
Rassmussen, Copp, and Zadina will probably make up the 3rd line. Sprong could be in the mix too.
Fabbri will be on the 2nd line as a winger. Playing him on the top line would likely get him killed (with his injury luck).
Kubalik seems like he start the season on the top line.
Jonatan Berggren is waiver exempt so he could be AHL destined despite his play in the NHL last season.

So confused
You're missing players....
Veleno will be re-signed (RFA with no arbitration rights= not that expensive). He's their 4th line centre.
6'6" Tim Gettinger who is probably going to the AHL.
But 6'2" Christian Fischer (signed to the Wings per Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports) is definitely an NHL player. He'll be a 4th line winger opposite Kostin.
Barring a trade, all your lines are screwed up. Zadina will be on the 3rd line probably with Rasmussen (who is better as a winger), and Copp. Fabbri is probably a 2nd line winger (until he gets hurt again). Jonatan Berggren's waiver exempt so he could very well be forced down to the AHL (even after his play last year).

DeBrincat for McTavish straight up with a Tarasenko signing
You do realize that DeBrincat wants out of Ottawa, Canada because he's got a wife (also from Detroit area) with a 1 year old and their parents and grandparents live in Michigan and Florida (snowbirds). Flying to Ottawa from Detroit (where some of the relatives live) is at least a 4 hour flight with a layover in Montreal or Toronto. From Florida it's even longer. Then you have to clear customs. Driving it's about 8 hours (plus customs). In addition, his wife wants to go back to work (she worked for a subscription lingerie company that was on Shark Tank)--that's where the whole be closer to relatives things come into play.
There is zero chance he signs long term across the country from family.

That Bertuzzi contract is going to look ugly in years 4, 5, and 6. There is a reason why one of the smartest GM's in the league chose to trade him rather than re-sign him long term. His style of play and injury history (knees and back/neck) are going to mean a quick fall from peak.
...and if you think Bertuzzi is going to take a discount to stay on a good team apparently you didn't see that he skipped games in Canada on his team rather than take a vaccine.

even is they use Chiarot and Wallinder as off handed d-men on the right side: they still have prospects path blocked.

Draft ideas

No actually, #9 and the players available are in a whole different tier than #15---if the picks go anywhere close to as expected. Then you have the Wings eating a huge salary and doing a pick swap of a 2nd for a 1st. Doesn't seem the best use of assets. Klingberg isn't going to want a short term deal at his age.
Beyond that the best they can hope for is Matvei Michkov falling because of KHL/3 yr commitment issues.
Next would be: Dalibor Dvorsky(perimeter shooter with lack of NHL speed so will be limited to a winger in the NHL). Offensively talented with both wrist shot and one timer accuracy. Uses his size to win puck battles and compete. Could be a 1st line winger.
Then the tier below:
Ryan Leonard (shoots right. college commitment to BC) is more a responsible 200 foot RW'er that has skill (hands) with physicality but won't be great offensively or defensively as he lacks playmaking skills (vision) and size (5' 11.5"). 2nd line RW'er. His player comparable is Artturi Lehkonen.
Oliver Moore has speed (best skater in the draft with NHL elite edgework) and a bit of scoring touch (but will be more of a 2nd line winger/#3 centre). He should be available. He is the USNTDP 2nd line centre and is on PP2 and PK1. His player comparable is Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
Gabe Perreault (lack of NHL speed so NHL winger) broke Auston Matthews' USNTDP single season point record (but so did Will Smith). Great stickhandler. Can score. projects as a 2nd line winger. Player comparable Lucas Raymond.
Brayden Yager(high end shot) all-situations center. Hasn't put it all together yet as his scoring didn't materialize this past year (lacks vision to get it through). Middle six player. Player comparable Vincent Trocheck.
You do realize this is Detroit's last year to take advantage of UFA with other teams hampered by the Covid escrow cap restrictions? Look for them to be active on that and in the trade market (where they have excess draft capital).

If Toronto wants to make it out of the 1st round they better load up on defense because they just got slightly worse in the crease this year.

Does this team make the playoffs
Barzal would holdout.
He is secretly crushed by Detroit's dumping of contracts. <strong>As while he is saying all the right things about re-signing on Long Island just like John Tavares did--he intends to pull a Tavares.</strong> Barzal looks around that NYI team and sees the void of young talent and the downward trajectory of the NYI franchise with puzzling coaching decisions that have been made.
You know he has one foot out the door and a team like Detroit that has 8M in cap room (and an additional 8M coming off the books in the summer between Pius Suter, Oskar Sundqvist, and Adam Erne) with a talented young core missing basically a #1 centre has to look awful appealing. If Fabbri is forced to medically retire as now both his knees have undergone repairs (MCL's I think) the cap room jumps to $12M.

Zadina is a 3rd line winger who still is considered a prospect--being he is only 23--so he might have room for growth. Especially since Detroit fired their coach for among other reasons not being able to grow the prospect's games (Seider and Raymond were good from day 1 and arguably somewhat struggled down the stretch. Raymond especially.)
Puljujärvi at 24 and having 5 seasons of NHL experience is who he is a 15-20 goal scoring 3rd liner. <strong>He's almost twice as expensive of a cap hit and 3x the actual salary amount than Zadina for 22-23.</strong>
It's almost a completely lateral trade with depth throw ins and you want Detroit to give up a 2nd and a 3rd and pay more next summer for a RFA that is already overpaid?
Detroit would pass.
