I wouldn't necessarily call Knies a prospect considering he'll be a top-6 forward next year.
Have you checked the amount of cap space the Leafs have? It's over 15 million before solving Matt Murray. And despite what fantasy you believe, NHL GM's don't strong-arm each other into anything, they do what works for both parties.

From the Flyers perspective of course, I can't imagine Toronto wants to spend assets that way though. Laughton just isn't enough of an upgrade

Toronto isn't trading a first and their top forward prospect for McDonaugh. You got him last year for free, retention is not worth that. TBH if they want to move him they probably need to retain regardless. Can't see them being interested. Maybe if Johanssen at 50% is included as well? But even then I'm doubtful that those guys are needle-movers for the Leafs.

Ideal Leafs Team
I don't think the Leafs want to be spending assets like that. Using high picks to dump a year of Murray is a terrible idea. Packaging everything you have left to get two middle-6 forwards probably isn't optimal either. Flyers fans will scream that it isn't enough, but it's far more than I'd like to see the Leafs spend in that situation.
You have no cap flexibility to resign Matthews and Nylander next year. I don't think they're adding all that long-term salary without having a plan for that. I think it's much more likely they'd look at somebody on an expiring deal for exactly that reason.

The Leafs might be interested but I don't think they will be at that price. Sure salary retention is valuable, but it seems pretty likely if you're moving McDonaugh you'll have to retain salary just to move him, so it seems kind of neutral.

Toronto would likely have zero interest in this trade with Parayko's contract. Maybe if St. Louis retained but it makes no sense for them to do that. I doubt this is a workable trade for either side.
OP I also think Matthews is signing for more. If he signs for 8 years I'd go to 13.5 or 14 for him (although he has to know that hurts the ability to build around him). If he's signing for 12.5 I bet it's a 3 year deal.

The situations are incredibly similar. They're not radically different players in the sense that one should be valued far more than the other. Hellebuyck is of course better, but worth nowhere near what your package is. Especially from a team that does not need a goalie since they already have one.

I could see Muzzin in Arizona if he's not playing. Once the Leafs pay his bonus he's only owed 2 million so he saves AZ money.

Both of those centre signings are bad. They make it harder to resign Matthews/Nylander and you're overpaying both guys and giving them term.
If an obvious upgrade at 2C can't be found this offseason I'm happy to wait and make a move later in the season. There's a ton of expiring UFA centres next year (Henrique, Schiefele, etc.) that would make sense there. No need to lock yourself in long-term to the new Alex Kerfoot.

Next season
That's a massive overpayment for Travis Konecny (salary retention or not). That's a terrible trade for the Leafs. I'd rather see them keep their firsts for now, especially since the bottom of the first round this year has some players to be excited about.
I don't see any reason to move Brodie or Jarnkrok either. Both are going to help you win now which you clearly want to do.

The Re-something
Toronto has a goalie and isn't going to massively overpay you to get Hellebuyck. He's a top goalie but he's not worth that at all (that's far more than the Avs paid for Darcy Kuempfer in a similar situation). And the Avs were more desperate.

And I have to be honest, I'm not sure this is a deal that Toronto needs to do. Samsonov gave them good performance last year and wasn't a major issue at any point in time. He's cheaper than Hart and they already have him on the roster, so the acquisition cost is none. I can't see the Leafs wanting to move multiple pieces they need to get a marginal upgrade in goal. If Hart is moving I'd be surprised if it was Toronto.

Toronto has no interest in doing that deal. Moving Murray will be much easier than that (as every trade in the NHL constantly teaches us)

Don't like either deal. Toronto doesn't trade away two firsts this offseason. Don't think the Jets have a ton of interest in Nylander with their wing depth and the trouble they will have getting him signed.

IF the Leafs trade Matthews (they won't) it's because he tells them he won't resign and they trade him for a haul with a new contract attached.
If he won't resign in Toronto, why in the world would he sign in Ottawa? And why would the Leafs trade him there?

Toronto
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Billy739</b></div><div>Dallas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa and SJS were the only teams Tavares would talk to as a UFA
Based on this i suspect he's not waiving a NMC to go to somewhere other then those 5.
Well 4 really as i doubt he wants to go to SJS now under a New GM when the teams become Sellers.
This was thrown in my face when i tried a Tavares for Anderson deal no one could be mad at.
I highly doubt he goes to WPG either way , maybe hold 3 way with DAL?
DAL gets Tavares
TML gets Schiefele
WPG gets Benn
Jaime Benn's style will be over in Canada
I'd give my left nut to have him and for the first time ever some DAL fans are looking to move him cause a call didnt go his way.
Tavares in DAL , i think they will the cup with Pavelski nailing Goalscoring while Tavares takes care of Faceoffs, Playmaking and shutting down forwards .</div></div>
Tavares and Schiefele are pretty even in my opinion. Schiefele is cheaper, but goes to UFA a year earlier so it's probably a wash. Sure Tavares has a big contract, but it's not like he's a cap dump and an anchor. He has been a point per game player his entire time with Toronto (he had 36 goals last year). Yes he's probably moving to the wing at least part-time, but that doesn't make him the cap dump some people think he is.
I'd love to see the Leafs add Schiefele or PLD from the Jets while flipping them some futures. It honestly depends on what Winnipeg wants to do. I don't know if they're good enough as currently constructed, but they probably try to run it back at least next year with their contract situations and then reevaluate.

Depends if they can find another upgrade for that 2C spot. I could see them giving him a 2-3 year deal below 5 AAV. If he does the job at 2C that's perfect, if not you can look for an upgrade closer to the deadline.
I think long-term is off the table for him with how last season went for him

Everybody loves prospects, but let's consider the fact that a centre who has scored 60 goals in a season might have more value than a 20 year old defenceman who's played 9 NHL games.
The Kings potentially could get Matthews as a UFA, you're absolutely correct, but they're bidding against 31 other teams at that point. But I don't really see him going to UFA anyway, and I think anybody trading for a top-3 player in the NHL (top-5 at WORST) is happy to pay the price.
I'm also MUCH MUCH happier if the Leafs pay Matthews whatever he wants and keep him

Changing the D
I completely disagree with your premise the Leafs have bad asset management. They've been in a playoff position for the last 7 years. Teams in playoff positions don't flip impending UFA's for draft picks. That would not at all have made the team better. They've done an excellent job of turning a player like Kapanen (who's been waived and given away for free) into drat picks and prospects. I don't agree with your criticism at all.
Not resigning players because you don't want to pay for their inflated UFA contract is good asset management, not bad (cap space is an asset). Keeping Hyman would have been nice, but would have been extremely difficult. The Leafs would not be better if they'd resigned JVR or Bozak to big deals, in fact they'd be much worse.
Trading Brodie because he's a year away from being an UFA is not the answer. Smart teams don't make themselves worse at a position for draft picks, which is what you've done here. Trading Brodie and Timmins is a terrible idea. Instead you've given away 15 million in UFA deals and made it extremely difficult to resign Matthews and Nylander. Seems like exactly the opposite of what you'd want to do.

I would be absolutely shocked if the Leafs traded Matthews. Unless he pulls a Tkachuk and says I'm 100% gone, they're not going to move him.
That being said, if the situation is similar and he comes with an extension negotiated (which is the only likely result at this point) LA is likely giving up this and maybe more. And they'd still win the trade.
