What?? That contract is a steal. He was in the Norris conversation early this season... his defensive metrics are phenomenal and he's 26, entering his prime. He makes Brady Skjei look like a good defenseman. Why would you not want that guy??

gotta go all in
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hedman77</b></div><div>As a Lightning fan:
Carolina is our biggest threat in the Central Division, without a doubt. Trocheck, Aho, Svechnikov, and (to my surprise) Jordan Staal are tearing it up. Nino Niederreiter has already matched his goals total from last season. Carolina and Tampa Bay are, as of when I'm writing this, 2nd and 3rd in goals for at 88 and 87 respectively. The Lightning have played one less game though. Both teams are clearly doing well offensively. Tampa Bay is 2nd in goals allowed with 51, while Carolina is 8th with 66. I realize that goals allowed isn't the be-all-end-all when it comes to evaluating defense, but it helps. I think it's fair to say that both the Lightning and Hurricanes have two of the best blue lines in the league, at least on paper.
The glaring difference between these two teams lies in goal.
Hurricanes fans have been quick to point out how well Mrazek was playing this year before he got hurt. And I understand why they're excited - Carolina hasn't had a good goalie in years. But I don't buy the hype around him. He's faced 63 shots this season, and 31 of them were against Detroit. Credit where it's due, he had a shutout against the Lightning and a shutout against the Red Wings. However, I don't think it's realistic to say he's going to be anything too special this year. In seasons where he's appeared in 10 games or more, he's finished above .920 once.
James Reimer can win games, but I see it more as the offense carrying him.
In all the games Reimer has gotten the W for so far this season, here's how many goals Carolina has scored:
3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 6, 5, 7, 5, 4, 4, 4.
And when he's lost?
4, 2, 1.
Carolina has the offense and the defense to hang with the best in the NHL. But they will not get past Tampa Bay or any other contender with a goaltending tandem of Mrazek and Reimer.</div></div>
You make some good points, yet you forget Nedejlkovic. Ned is currently 8th in the league for save percentage at .926 and has a 2.21 GAA in 8 starts. He's played very well. When Mrazek comes back, I think the tandem will be Mrazek and Ned, with Reims as the 3rd goalie. And if Petr gets hot again, that's as good as anybody's goaltending.

Better D
I mean I guess... obviously Fleury has more upside, but he's played like doodoo this year. I'd be okay with it. The only problem is Ceci would basically be a rental for the Canes as his contract expires after this season while the Pens would have a year or 2 more of control, and I'm not sure if Ceci is the kind of player you go for as a rental. Plus, Fleury is kind of the Canes' Kraken Bait right now, and I'd rather Seattle take him over Skjei or Gards who are playing better. I doubt they'd take Ceci even if the Canes resigned him, if they really wanted him they'd probably sign him in free agency.

How to push for the cup WITHOUT TRADING FOR A GOALIE
This is pretty good, I like trading for Eric. However, I really don't like trading McGinn, he's been so good to start this season playing on the top line. He's versatile, and would be invaluable for a cup run.

How far do they go
The center position is stacked. LW is pretty good, RW is thin and so is defense after the 1st pair. Goaltending is meh at best. Make the playoffs as a wild card, exit in the conference finals. (also you have like 8 centers on this team)

Dougie wants to stay
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>he wants to stay but sadly they wont have the space for him unless they want to sacrifice elsewhere as they got some big names to sign among other things. Sure Seattle can take someone but Geekie or Bean is more likely to be taken over Gardiner. Carolina had 28 mill in cap but to sign a new starting goalie, Svechnikov, Foegele, and others wont be cheap.</div></div>
I think Waddell can get it done, especially if what Hamilton is saying about wanting to stay is true. Niedereitter or Gards will probably be a cap casualty but that's okay, I'd rather have Dougie and Svech resigned than those guys.

As has been said, Gards is not as bad as people think he is. It's not like he's a liability on the ice or anything, part of why his production was down is because Carolina's d core is so freakin stacked that he was on the 3rd pair and playing those minutes for most of the year. I honestly don't think the Canes want to get rid of him, nor should they if (for some reason) they have to pay draft capital to offload his contract. Leave him unprotected next year and if Seattle takes either him or Skjei, then you keep the other one and still have some wiggle room to sign Dougie and Svech

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bdawwwgy1</b></div><div>What do you think would be fair then?</div></div>
I think if you take out Honka and make the 2nd into a 3rd it's more fair. The trade would then look like Gardiner+Puistola+3rd ----> Gusev+4th, which I think is alright. In my mind, there's no clear winner with that and it helps both teams fill holes

i'm not saying the basis of the trade is off, all i am saying is that there are no clear winners/losers in this trade.
it is just my opinion that if a team is trading a left shot dman for a number 1 center - more needs to be added, unless your last name is Hedman.</div></div>
Ahhhh... I see. When Dougie is hurt Slavin slides over onto the right side. It is his off side, but he plays it often. That's part of why he is so good, because he can play both sides and is elite at both.

Bro, I always see you hating on Skjei... he's not as bad as you think. The contract isn't great, sure, but he became a pretty good 2LD once he got away from Trouba.
But yeah the rumors were that Brind'amour didn't like Kase for some reason so I don't think the Canes do that anyways, you can keep him

That's... completely off. I've watched Pesce a lot, and in the last few years he's shown he would be a top pair guy on any other team AND he's on a heck of a contract. To get him you'd pay what you normally would to get a top pair RHD, which is more than Thomson and a 6th
