Blackwood Follow-Up
San Jose is going to be really reluctant to trade Ferraro. Along with Hertl he's the heart of the team, and culture matters in a rebuild. Trading Ferraro is going to have an outsized effect on morale/culture in the room and that's bad for developing guys like Eklund, Zetterlund, Emberson etc. Its one thing to trade aging vets like Burns and Karlsson, but Ferraro is only 25. It would send a bad message to the rest of the guys in the locker room in my opinion, so you really only do it for a massive overpayment. A 2nd, and the nebulous value of "what we might get" for Pesce isn't going to be enough I think. Especially not with Blackwood thrown in as well.

(CGY/VAN) - Zadorov for 2024 5th (CHI), 2026 3rd (VAN)
I have to think Zadorov screwed Calgary by asking out right now. The market isn’t hot in december and team could have had much more at the deadline.

Doesn't really make much sense to me. I could see Hertl wanting to go CBJ, but can't envision why Laine would want to go to SJ nor why SJ has any need for him.

Do not trade Blackwood
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yikes</b></div><div>Barabanov has been injured and 0 points in 6 games. There has to be changed to see that evaluation change this TDL.
It was a suggestion to check in. If Hoffman has a stat line that I suggested, to dump Fast and add a 2nd line scorer for a run, it’s more than fair. Thrun got a 3rd and you could argue if Hoffman has 20g he could return more then a third in some scenarios.</div></div>
Morrow is the Canes top RD prospect, and ultimately the successor for Burns. Hoffman isn’t getting a top prospect even if he hits 20 goals. Fast isn’t a cap dump either.
Even if Hoffman hits 20 goals, it’s unlikely he would even be a target for the Canes. Everyone already knows he is a 1 dimensional player, and completely useless everywhere else on the ice. The Canes tend to avoid those kinds of players like the plague.

Pettersson
Elias Pettersson is getting more than $10,000,000 per season long term. I bet he comes somewhere in the 8 x $11,500,000 range.
And that offer is easily beat if Patrik Allvin were to trade him. The 1st round pick is late. Holtz hasn't necessarily lit the world on fire in the NHL since his draft year. You want Pettersson? He's going to cost you pieces that you're definitely not going to want to surrender.

Ah yes, a 2nd (that will likely be in the 33-38 spot) and a 4th for a goaltender with a sub 900 sv% last season.
Makes perfect sense for a rebuilding Sharks that already have 2 disappointing goaltenders

Couture to BOS

A 1st in 2026?
We can't be subsidizing the Eastern conference for years.
Also use the retention spot on Duclair, Hoffman, or Labanc this year.
Then Granlund or Sturm next year.
Potentially Ferraro or Benning the year after.
None of those (maybe Ferraro) would return a 2026 1st I'm guessing, but we'd get back more picks.

once again leafs players show they are selfish. is he worth this much, sure, especially when it will expire before he ages out of his prime.
but the culture there is so self-centered with all these big contracts, no wonder they cant manage to keep guys like bunting and kerfoot, no room for any depth

We did get something from SJ. They took Hoffman for free.
We needed to move a forward and the market wasn't there to drop Hoffman without giving something up. Nobody else was taking him for free and we didn't need to use a retention slot to move him.

Everyone saying that SJ lost this are complete idiots. In 2-3 years you'll all be saying wow look how young and good SJ is. All the moves they’ve made over the past 4 seasons have been for a reason. They have 3-4 grade A prospects in the pipeline and 5-6 B+ guys who will be coming up around the same time to fill out those bottom 6 roles. Very good depth in the system.
Every 10-15 years we see a flip in the Standings with teams. SJS, CBJ, CHI, ANA, BUF are all about to be very good very soon. While TBL, BOS, VGK, PIT, FLA, etc will start to fall.

This team sucks.
I hope Duclair, Barb, and Hoffman are all gone by the TDL. Maybe even Rutta.
Hopefully we get picks.
Maybe we can even do Rutta for Myers.
In general, we're not going to be good enough for Couture or Hertl to do anything. It's a shame.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jpsnow13</b></div><div>All this is true, but you are missing out on<strong> the no 1 reason to make this trade. SJ saving a lot of money.
</strong>
Everybody said they would have to eat 25%+ to trade Karlsson away and were able to do it for half of that dead money.</div></div>
Are they though? Let's do the math.
Karlsson is owed $39M over the next 4 years. San Jose retained 13%, or $5M. They took back 3 players: Hoffman ($5M), Granlund ($11M) and Rutta ($5M). This trade is costing them $26M in cash over the next 4 years.
If they had simply retained 50% on Karlsson, that would have cost them $19.5M over the next 4 years. So this trade is NOT saving them money.
Here's the other thing: what would the return have been if they had offered to retain 50%? I would think it would be significantly higher in terms of picks & prospects.
Yes they do free up more cap space in year 3 and 4 doing it this way, but with the cap set to rise significantly and SJS not poised to come out of their rebuild any time soon, is this really any use to them?
I don't see any way to couch this as a successful manoeuvr by Grier.
