So Buffalo is going to trade away two pretty good forward prospects -- first-round draft picks at that -- to acquire two more left-handed defensemen to play behind Dahlin, Power, Byram and Samuelsson? That seems counter-intuitive.

Edit: As for cap space, pretty sure going rate is 1st rounder for 3million. Seravilli or another pundit was quoted as saying that. So yes, Flyers should take advantage of cap space.</div></div>
Columbus is the youngest team in the league, give or take a few months depending on who's up and who isn't for Buffalo. There is no reason to trade futures to rush a competitive window this season. Laine's out indefinitely, probably with a concussion. Neither Gaudreau nor Werenski look like themselves. The kids can't seem to do anything yet, and one of the top prospects was sent to the AHL because of it. The team is being carried by its fourth line and depth defensemen right now (and Provorov, so thanks for that win-win). The goaltending is a house of cards. Travis Konecny isn't the difference between sixth/seventh in the Metro and the playoffs for Columbus. Trying to launch from that unstable base is a recipe for disaster. This is just a team three years into a rebuild... continuing to rebuild.

People get too caught up on pairings and lines. There are going to be all sorts of pairings and line combinations depending on the situation. Winning or losing? End of the period? Offensive Zone or Defensive Zone? Coming off a PK or PP?

Neither makes ANY sense for us
We aren’t gonna give them huge contracts they want,
especially with so much great young talent coming
It’s just not gonna happen

You told me that Jack Quinn, John Paterka, Krebs are worst linemate then Armia, Hoffman, Dadonov also never pan out. Mtl had to play Tierney. Dach had a 20 game stretch st the start of the season where team was healthy, he played with Monahan, Suzuki, Caufield, Suzuki was over s point per game for almost half a season but by the end of the season there where no one around him. Buffalo was a offensive thriving force. Mtl was at the very opposite. They are building the foundation. Buffalo have started building around those.</div></div>
Crazy how Dach dropped off when he wasn’t being carried by Caufield & Suzuki
Oh wait, no it’s not crazy at all
He’s just not good enough to carry his own line like Cozens did

Sabres
I think Lybushkin is a far better depth option than either Stillman or Bryson, but the Sabres need options on the left side.
Mittlestadt will be playing on the 2nd line..... here is why. The fun fact (and ine NO ONE would guess) is Casey was in the NHL top 5 in primary assist per 60 minutes. With Oloffson looking to be a lock.on 2nd line minutes in lieu of the Quinn injury, having Mittlestadt on the same line would be very beneficial.

Great conversations all excellent POV.
Let me begin, it should be obvious that neither Clifton nor Johnson are top pairing defensemen as they both signed slightly less than 2nd pairing contracts .
Let's cut tp the chase, last season Bryson, Clague, Pilut and Fitzgerald played 132 games.
This season those 132 games will be played by Stillman, Clifton and Johnson.
So that trio does not need to be top pairing just better than AHL performance and that is clearly evident.
If you wish since Samuelsson, Power, Dahlin and Jokiharju all played over 21 min/gm, Johnson and Clifton are upgrading our third pairing TOI performance who played only 14 min/gm.

I don't think Dahlin is signing for less than 9M, especially for 8 years. I'd even go as far as to say i'd expect it to be closer to 10M on an 8 year deal. But that still gives them lots of room to work with

Not sure why people keep thinking that. He's a C that can play wing. Took more faceoffs than everyone on CAR not named Staal and Aho.
Skinner-Mitts-Tuch was BUF's 1st line at the end of the year. 5v5: 58CF% 11GF 4GA 73.33GF% 56.38xGF%
And he's not exactly small at 6'1 195. Plays with grit as well.
Put up 34 points over last 41 games, same output as Aho.

You already have Levi and while I agree that getting another goalie to shelter him for a little bit is a good idea - I feel like spending this much of your capital to do so would be inefficient. There are cheaper options available for you

What I think Kevyn will try to do
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabresparaavida</b></div><div>I don’t think the Sabres have any interest in Gibson at this point. Too long for too much money to fit into Kevyn Adams’ plan. It’s clear he envisions Devon Levi as the future in net, shown by his comments on signing him and bringing him to Buffalo immediately. They also didn’t make UPL AHL playoff eligible, which they could have done which signals that they view him as an NHL goalie. No way they bring in a goalie on that kind of contract.</div></div>
I for one very much appreciate to the insight you provided into Buffalo's situation and logical explanation to not be in on Gibson instead of the usual "Gibson is trash, who the F would want him" response. Gold star to you sir.

Larkin

They are producing almost identically, both with 43 points this season, except Cozens is 21, and Larkin is 26. Cozens is also bringing that production playing 3 minutes less per game than Larkin, and playing with lesser linemates. I’d be surprised if a single GM would trade Cozens for Larkin, let alone a team that is rebuilding a young up and coming team, and not yet a cup contender.</div></div>
Easily no thanks. Want to keep Kulich and Johnson and draft pics too

The sabres have no right shot d depth. And their roster is incredibly soft. Lyubushkin is not a guy they should be moving at all. I won't be surprised if a gm offers something they have to say yes to, but it won't be a 5th. No gm wants to get softer going into the playoffs.
