Gibson and Fiala will be Capitals per source
I don't wanna burst your bubble on Fiala, but Evolving Hockey has his next contract projected to be in the neighborhood of 8 years, $9.444M AAV. I'd totally be on board for Fiala, since he's 25 and all, but you'd have to be pretty certain that Backstrom is LTIRetired before you make a move like that.

Boring Offseason seems likely
I'd be pretty surprised if the Caps didn't do anything "big" this off-season. When GMBM has said that he's going to do something, he usually follows through. I don't think there's going to be a gigantic shake-up move, but I'd expect a top six forward and a veteran goaltender at the least.

I don't remember GMBM saying that he was going to spend to the cap either. I think the only thing he said is that goaltending is his #1 priority.
I don't think there's a clear strategy for the off-season until Backstrom decides what his plan is going to be. I'm sure they're planning in each possible Backstrom scenario, but I'd be really surprised if they're planning to spend to the cap if Backstrom is planning on coming back this year or next.

I think they should hold onto Sammy unless the trade value between him and VV are too good to pass up. Regardless of the direction they go in, they absolutely need to get a new goalie coach in, but since Blaine Forsythe continues to be employed by this team, I'm not so sure it happens lol

He could definitely be average, but I wonder if he got a shot on a better team if he'd perform better. Obviously, you can still put up good numbers on a bad team, but he faced the 7th most high danger shots against this regular season.
I think ideally, Quick probably makes the most sense with the timeline to me, but idk. I'm super curious what GMBM does this off-season.

Kakko Offersheet
If I'm the Caps GM, I'm probably not giving up future firsts or seconds with how this roster is constructed currently unless the asset is something you absolutely love. Pretty much everyone but Carlson on the defensive corps is on an expiring contract, goaltending still needs to be figured out, etc. 2023-24 has the potential to be one of the worse Caps teams in over a decade.

Lets fix the Caps
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Czu8iks</b></div><div>I did quick check on the prospects. I may not know them, like at all.
Iorio was 2nd 55th pick last year - 365 days from 54 teams not selecting him.
Lapierre was had worse point production in MQHL than Sabres prospect Oliver Nadeau.
Hathaway is bottom line winger, who in certain enviroment may not crack the roster - hence AHL bound.
Those are not top tier prospects, who get you 99pts center with cap retention and his linemen from top line of 92 pts team...</div></div>
Hence the "not saying that's the package required to get Miller" comment.
Lapierre is still a solid prospect with top six potential. Iorio has solid upside, and posted 44 points in 60 games as a defenseman in the WHL. Hathaway is a bottom line winger on the Capitals in terms of the lineup, but if you watch the Caps, the fourth line is the Caps' shutdown defensive line. They skate a ton of minutes. He's more of a checking focused bottom six winger, but he's certainly not a fringe NHLer or someone who will be in the AHL.

Lapierre and Iorio aren't lower level prospects, and Hathaway certainly isn't a 30 year old AHLer lol. Lapierre would have been a top 10 pick if teams weren't scared off by his injury (that has been rectified now). Iorio is the Caps' top RHD prospect taken in the first round last year.
Not saying that's the package required to get Miller from the Canucks, but your comment on the Caps' side of the package is disingenuous.

he's likely the Caps' best LD prospect currently now that Fehervary graduated to full NHL time. Johansen could be trade bait though.

The Caps aren't trading Kuznetsov with Backstrom's questionable future. They've committed to Ovi and the existing core (of which Kuznetsov is a part of) that they'll continue to attempt to compete for the remainder of Ovi's contract.

Backstrom and Wilson out long term
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ArlingtonCaps</b></div><div>The Monahan idea is actually fairly smart.
. But can you explain to me why the Caps would light a 2 on fire to trade Johanson for Graves. Like why give up a 2 and a young 3rd pairing LHD for an expiring contract LHD in a year that you’re tanking. So so so so so dumb.</div></div>
Mainly because one Johansen is only 3 years younger than Graves, and two, if you're bad at the deadline you can still flip all these expiring contracts including Graves. I also think that the front office has committed to remaining competitive (or at least trying to) to Ovi and Backstrom. I also usually tend to "overpay" in trades to avoid comments like "that wouldn't get x player!" comments rather than "the core of this package does or doesn't make sense".

Eliminate the 2nd and you have GMBT listening.</div></div>
Philly had to attach a 2022 2nd and a 2022 7th for Arizona to take on Shayne Gostisbehere's contract and his cap hit was only $4.5M. Calgary also has ~$27M to sign Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Mangiapane. Not to mention CGY has only 12 players (6 F, 4 D, and 2 G) next season with that. Evolving Hockey's contract projections have Gaudreau getting an 8 year deal with an $11.630 cap hit, Tkachuk getting an 8 year deal with an $11.270 cap hit, and Mangiapane with a 5 year deal with a $5.835 cap hit. Those three contracts alone are $28,735,000. You're going to have to pay to offload Monahan's contract. No one is taking his cap hit for "free", especially not without CGY retaining some of that salary.

Staying competitive
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>All_Knowing</b></div><div>Please no Holtby. People forget, he was incredible in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2018. But other than that, he was quite inconsistent... and he is older now...</div></div>
I don't disagree about Holtby being inconsistent and on the back half of his career. I do think he would provide a bit more stability on the back-end than what's there now.
For reference:
Holtby: .913 sv%, 3.8 GSAA, .875 5v5 sc sv%, .853 5v5 hd sv%
Samsonov: .897 sv%, -11.5 GSAA, .858 5v5 sc sv%, .795 5v5 hd sv%
Vanecek: .909 sv%, 1.4 GSAA, .879 5v5 sc sv%, .809 5v5 hd sv%
Seems to me, you bank on VV for the future, and then use Holtby as a veteran 1A/1B in that kind of scenario. Doesn't even need to be Holtby, but the Caps need someone to help them win now, and VV and Sammy together aren't carrying the weight.

I don't disagree, Quick just best fit the "veteran goalie who could possibly be traded" mold that the Caps will go after in the off-season. Could be re-signing Holtby too.
