Gibson and Fiala will be Capitals per source

Created by: OviTheGr8
Team: 2022-23 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2022
Published: Jun. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Note: I am the source

Rationale (yes I know I'm an idiot):

Sheary is cheap undersized winger that Minnesota covets who has won (particularly in Pitt where Guerin was in FO) and given their cap constraints, I think a former first round defensemen, a second (possibly conditional) and Sheary could get something done (maybe?)

Ducks get a younger but less reliable goalie in Samsonov as well as Leason who projects as a top-9 power forward as well as draft capital for a goalie who reportedly has bad body language due to the lack of team success and would be willing to move who is in win now mode.

Eller trade could be to anywhere so before Wings fans come at me, just figured since Stevie Y has signed vets at deadline and flipped them for assets so was my first thought.

Moves allow Wilson to come back late December, January from ACL and Backstrom to "maybe" come back and play for playoffs after Friedman reported that there is a procedure that Backstrom is considering with a grueling recovery so who really knows.

for a goalie who reportedly has bad body language due to the lack of team success and would be willing to move who is in win now mode.

Gibson himself came out today and said those claim are false

He said he wants to spend his entire career in ANA

Doesn't mean he wont be moved, but it does mean it'll take a lot more than the offer above

If I saw a player who reportedly had "bad body language", I certainly wouldn't then throw him in as the starting goaltender on a contending team tears of joy

I don't wanna burst your bubble on Fiala, but Evolving Hockey has his next contract projected to be in the neighborhood of 8 years, $9.444M AAV. I'd totally be on board for Fiala, since he's 25 and all, but you'd have to be pretty certain that Backstrom is LTIRetired before you make a move like that.

You both basically said what I wanted to say lol. At this point I do think it's more likely he gets traded than not. I think Verbeek should trade him because I think his value will decrease a lot if the Ducks (ad Gibson himself) continue to play the same way next year. I love Gibby and I don't want to see him leave, but I kinda think it's time for everyone to move on. Gibson could bounce back on a good team and I'd love it if he won a cup, I want to see him succeed whether that is in Anaheim or elsewhere.

Meh. I'm fine if he gets moved, but GMPV needs to set a price, and if someone offers it, great, if not, keep him. Trading him simply for the sake of trading him isn't good asset management. My main thing here-It's not like this summer is the last time he can be traded. *IF* his value is as low as some perceive it to be (which is weird since the poll of NHL Execs had him as a top 5 goalie...), then it's not like that's going to get worse.

So which Gibson is it that Ducks fans have been watching the past 3 years???? Has he started off strong then been bad late in seasons because the games weren't meaningful and the defense in front of him (2 of whom were traded this past deadline for a first, a second, and a good prospect) was bad? Sounds like a bad teammate who doesn't compete hard. Is it because the Ducks rode him into the ground and he has lingering injury issues? Not great for a guy who is getting 6.2m for the next 5 years to have those. Or has he just been straight up not good? Then why would anyone pay "much more" in the first place?

Gibson probably will get more than that offer, like swapping out the second for a first and a better prospect than leason, but not much more.

Don't get me wrong thats not enough for Fiala but Sheary is making 1.5 mil and put up 40 points last year with very little power play time, not at all a cap dump and the type of guy I assume the wild would be all over. Alexeyev will also play in the NHL next year, has second pair upside.

The same Gibson that has played the second most amount of games and faced the second most amount of shots over the past 5 years while playing for a bottom 10 team in the league over that span.

I love the couch GMs that claim to know inside workings of locker rooms without a single connection

The Athletic polled anonymous GMs, execs and former players at the start of last season and they ranked Gibson 5th in the league, the people who have opinions that matter clearly see Gibson as a top 10 goalie in the league still.

Ducks have no reason to trade him unless they get blown away, a late first and a B prospect doesnt get close to him

Oh yeah, should've specified. Verbeek shouldn't be selling low, either he gets what he wants for Gibson or he stays in Anaheim. I should've worded it differently: If Verbeek gets a good offer, he should do it. Definitely not the last time he can be traded but I feel like this summer his value is still the same as it has been the last few seasons. But if his stats are similar next season (whether that is all because of him or not is irrelevant imo), I think GMs won't be willing to pay as much anymore.

Connor s is an old, bottom line player Minnesota has enough of, so no they won't. They have no need for a d prospect when they already have 9 d under contract and bunch of top d prospects. So it's a ****ty offer for fiala

I literally said its not enough for Fiala. What is with the Sheary slander? He's 29 on a super cheap contract for one more year, played up and down the lineup including an extended run on the top line and was > .5ppg

Saying he's a bottom line player isn't a slander. He's no different than freddy G. So it's not an attack on him, but Minnesota did need him. A d prospect will have no room in Minnesota. So sheary and the d prospect need to be replaced and talk starts with 1st round pick

"Gibson and Fiala will be Capitals per source"

Didn't your source also tell you that you'll have to spend a first-round draft pick to get either one? Plus a lot more?

I don’t think he will get that much. I imagine Fiala gets 7.5m to 8m depending. As a wild fan, I would love for someone to give him an 8.5m offer sheet but if thats where the market values him I bet Minnesota gets way way way better trade offers
