Im pretty sure gmbm was lookint to trade kuzy but no one wants him with all the off ice drama and effort</div></div>
There are other options for contracts to move if the Caps want more flexibility under the cap ceiling. Schultz is on an expiring contract at $4M and the Caps have four NHL quality RHD right now. Or they can choose to move Hagelin to a team that needs PK help and pull up Jonsson-Fjallby. Long story short, the Caps don't have any options in the organization to plug in for Kuznetsov, and outside of netting someone like Monahan, there are no viable options in the trade market that keep the Caps in the playoff conversation.
Time to push your chips in on Kuznetsov staying and hopefully having a great year. If the Caps don't have 2018 Kuznetsov, they're not going anywhere, but they're also not going anywhere if they have Dvorak as their 2C.

MacLellan came out and said they never actively tried to trade him. They listened on offers, most likely, but you don't move out a top six center for a forward that did not have a good 2021 season. Kuznetsov had a somewhat down year this year and was still miles ahead of Dvorak. If they did this package, the Caps would probably miss the playoffs.

Is Seattle a Playoff team
Feels like anything's possible with how the Pacific is shaking out. Only real clear cut contender is Vegas, IMO. Feels like the standings could go:
1. Vegas
2. Edmonton
3. Calgary
4. Seattle
5. Vancouver
6. LA
7. San Jose
8. Anaheim

Korpisalo is solid...but I am very wary of trading a very good defensive prospect for a goalie on an expiring contract.

Yeah, I mean, the trade could work to any team looking to contend that struggled on the PK.

Thread:
we couldve afforded holtby
Counterpoint: Holtby has massively regressed and hasn't been a good regular season goalie since 2018-19.
His last two seasons:
2019-20: .897 SV%, 3.11 GAA, 11 Really Bad Starts, -16.8 GSAA (Samsonov's numbers: .913 SV%, 2.55 GAA, 2 Really Bad Starts, 2.3 GSAA)
2020-21: .889 SV%, 3.67 GAA, 5 Really Bad Starts, -13 GSAA (Demko's numbers: .915 SV%, 2.85 GAA, 3 Really Bad Starts, 8.2 GSAA)
He's performed considerably worse than his fellow goaltenders the past two seasons. He's just...not good anymore, unfortunately. Great human being, and will always be a legend in DC for his 2018 cup run, but he's washed up now.

I think that 5th year is what brought the AAV under $10M. At the end of that deal, the Caps won't care. It's basically just a ticket to watch him try to break the goals record.

I agree, I just don't know how healthy he's gonna be. He wasn't the same after the hamstring injury in 2019, and an achilles could be really bad for him.

CAPS - Give me some feedback
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canucks33</b></div><div>Easy no from Vancouver. Canucks could do something around Holtby for Jensen.</div></div>
Jensen had a good year in 2021, so he has positive value. Holtby doesn't have positive value, or else the Canucks would have traded him already. Holtby's adjusted GAA was 4.05, so his underlying stats are actually worse than his production. Holtby is coming off of his two worst years in his career, with sub-.900 save percentages.
I wouldn't expect the Caps to move both Schultz and Jensen. It's one or the other, and Schultz would probably be the easier contract to move with only a year remaining.

Saw some rumors last night that Suter is looking for a four year deal. Think the Caps stay far away from him if that's the case.

Kuznetsov trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>xxToothxx</b></div><div>Take out the 1st round pick and then retain some salary.
He is an expensive has been.</div></div>
Yeah, that's just incorrect. Kuznetsov is still a top six center and has gotten better defensively. The 2021 season was the best season he had in goals above replacement over the past three years. He went from -5.4 dGAR last season to 0.1 dGAR this season. That's a remarkable improvement, considering his dGAR was -8.2 in 2018-19.
He scored 29 points in 41 games with his post-COVID struggles, which is nothing to blink at. The Caps do want more out of Kuznetsov, but if they're tired of anything, it's the off-ice stuff, not the on-ice play.

+1. He fits precisely nowhere in the Caps' lineup, will add to an already cap strapped roster, and isn't worth a 4th for the Caps.

I mean...I think it was more about the money he wanted as a free agent on the open market than anything. If Holtby wanted around $2M a year, he would have been a Capital.

I don't think Stephenson is going to be a viable 2C option for the Caps. I think this would actually add a bit of cap on the Caps side too, which wouldn't be ideal with Ovechkin and Samsonov still needing new contracts. Fleury would be interesting, but the value in doesn't really match the value out at this point.

For sure. Think it just makes the most sense to do so, since he's super capable and has a lower cap hit. If Seattle takes one of Schultz, Jensen, or Dillon, the Caps will be fine.

Agreed. Evolving Hockey has his contract projection at 3 years with a $5.578M cap hit. For sure still a top four defenseman. I don't think he makes sense for the Caps though, since they really need to get younger and LHD is their deepest position organizationally.

Doubt it. Apparently Seattle is going to be very wary of larger contracts, which makes sense. Especially if they follow the model Vegas set with acquiring high value, high cost assets to round out the team into a true contender.
