Rielly's going to ask for what he's going to ask for regardless of how the team treats him. It's just how the world works nowadays. However if anyone on the Leafs were to take a discount to stay put it would be Rielly IMO

A natural choice would be Tavares. He'd have the best composure for dealing with the media. But given he didn't have playoff success with the Isles in that role, I think Leafs management will go with fresh blood and pick Matthews. It's also a good "strategic" move for management, as this makes Matthews really central to the team, given he'd be the most likely to walk as UFA.

They'll most likely play either the Bruins or lightning in the first round, too...

Maybe next year, though?

My pick would be Rielly. I think Tavares has enough on the plate that he doesn't need the C. With or without the C, Tavares brings leadership so giving it to Matthews or Rielly makes the most sense.

The C would also be a nice thing to add when talking contract negotiations with Rielly as noted above.
