Description

Regardless how good the back to back cup achievement felt as a Pens fan, it was still disappointing that they didn’t 3peat. They could’ve cemented their legacy as the best team of the salary cap era. It’s true that the Penguins likely ran out of gas that playoffs plus several key players were dealing with major injury, however, I still feel some moves could’ve been done differently throughout the season.

The Ryan Reaves trade was a mistake from the beginning. You never trade for a player who you know is not gonna fit into your team, regardless how good he is. They should’ve traded Oskar Sundqvist & their 2017 1st to Florida for Jared McCann instead. That would’ve given them a solution at 3C following the departure of Bonino & they wouldn’t have had to go after Brassard. Kevin Hayes was another option. JG Pageau as well.

I understand why the team signed Matt Hunwick as they lost both Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey, plus, he played respectably in a top 4 role alongside Morgan Rielly the season before, but they should've traded for a younger right-handed defenseman. Trading Conor Sheary for Dylan DeMelo would've been perfect at the time.

Instead of trading for Brassard, I would’ve traded with Toronto for one of Marner or Kapanen instead.

The rest of the moves were fine, and while it's true this team would've probably had to have gotten blown up the season after, to win 3 straight cups would've been more than worth it.

Agree you knew from the start that Reaves’ skillset wasn’t gonna fit in well for Sullivan. He was slow, had no finesse & was poor defensively. All red flags.

Yes but I don't think the Leafs would of made that trade.
