Habs agressive stunners Price to COL cap space for Barzal

Created by: nilees24
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2020
Published: May 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For the Habs to improve on offense & defense they'll have to give up their crown jewel in net. And yes, for the Habs to resign pillar players long-term (Gallagher, Danualt, Petry), their only option is departing with Price's 10.5 million cap space. Sakic is in need of a goaltender with a high pedigree, Price would waive his no-trade clause for a Cup contender in the Western conference. MTL can ride Francouz and Crawford as BRIDGE goaltenders until Primeau is ready to go for the 2022/23 season. Give them both 40 games each and find out which one is good to go for a playoff run.

Projected cap space - (81.5 mill salary cap spikes to 84.5 mill for 2021/22)

Word out of Montreal is Ilya Kovalchuk is a lock to return (likely 3 mil/yr deal with performance bonuses). Feeling is Tatar & Weal are not affordable to re-sign for 2021/22 season (unless Drouin is traded in 2021-22). All other UFA's/RFA's at start of 2021/22 (Gallagher, Danault, Petry, Armia, Lehkonen, Poehling, etc.) can be resigned at fair market value (total cap hit for top 23 players just under $84 mill for 2021/22 season).

2021/22 Contract Offers (UFA's/RFA's):
Gallagher 6 yr / 43.5 mill (7.25 mill/yr.)
Danualt 6 yr / 36 mill (6 mill/yr.)
Petry 4 yr / 22 mill (5.5 mill/yr.)
Armia 4 yr / 16 mill (4 mill/yr.)
Lehkonen 3 yr / 9 mill (3 mill/yr.)
Poehling 2 yr / 1.7 mill (850k/yr.)
Caufield 3 yr / 2.775 mill (925k/yr entry-level deal.)

Price isn’t a top-5 goalie though. Rask, Bishop, Kuemper, Vasilevskiy, Hellebuyck, Jarry, Binnington; all of these goalies are better than Price at this point in their careers. Price has had the better career, sure. But Colorado wouldn’t be trading for his past successes. They would be trading for a 32-year old on a bad contract who’s best seasons are behind him.

Not picking a fight because I have faught this fight hundreds on times on this site but 41% of players voted him the best in the league, THIS YEAR, Most GMs still think he is the best in the league, not justifying any of it but thinking he would be traded for anything less then this is a mistake.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. For MTL to improve on offense, defense, and in cap space. Price has to go. Avs need him for the next 3 yrs.

Quoting: nilees24
haha exactly. Terrific comparison .... Patrick Roy and Carey Price. Sakic remembers how that deal worked out in 96 and 01.

Buddy this trade has been on this site for 2 years. I have faught the good fight. Show some respect to a veteran.

You misunderstand me... grubauer is better than price is the last few years.

You cant have either for that albatross of a goalie contract

I'm stunned you'd say that. All that cap space avail. Tsk Tsk. Top 5 goalie in the world right now. And you'd prefer Francouz and Graubuer. You could just trade Price in 5 yrs for peanuts and maybe win a Cup along the way. Shocked.

absolutely not. the Habs made their bed, now they have to lie in it. Nobody is going to bail you out of Prices horrible contract, especially if you are asking them to give up a top pair D + solid goalie + 1st

I remind you that the NHL did a poll of players and they agreed that Price was the best goalie in the league. SO if players and GMs think he's the best, would that make him the best?

Colorado is not winning a Cup with Francouz. So much cap space in COL, I'd be floored if they didn't shoot for a top-tier goaltender. I remind you that Price is a top-5 goaltender for the next 3 years. That is COL window to win a Cup.

Colorado isn't winning a cup by destroying their LHD either. Montreal fans should know better than most why having a good LHD is important...

I retract the 1st round pick. Price and a cup run for 3 years. for Girard and Francouz. You'd be nutz not to take it. 96 and 01 all over again.

Price isnt a top 20 goalie this year... and hes been declining, and yes I'd rather keep my guys for a much better chance at winning a cup... who's going to take him in 5 years when nobody will take him now

You should watch Patrick Roy highlights from 96 .... and in 2001.

I witnessed Roy live during that time. He’s the exception, not the rule. You’re asking Colorado for a King’s Ransom in the hopes that he doesn’t turn out like the majority of goalies that have played in the NHL.

And why does Colorado only have a 2-3 year window? Nearly their entire core is full of guys in their early-mid 20’s. They have the cap space to sign all of them, and they have some blue chip prospects nearly ready for the NHL. They are among the NHL teams that likely have the longest playoff window at this point in time.

So which goalie would you trade for to give up Girard? Francouz and Graubuer are prob not going to get the job done and go get a deep playoff run

No he doesnt. Sorry to say but only fans think he has negative value. I get why, but inside the league, Price is easily a top 10 goalie.

Grubauer and Francouz were one of the strongest tandems in the league. Girard is our top D man. Why would Sakic trade him for a goalie we dont need?

Your a fan, just like the ones who voted John Scott in the all star game.

Players who are colleagues of Carey Price voted him the best by a large majority

Proved your own point

to the Avs he has no value. If I was Colorado's GM and Bergevin offered Price for free I would say no

I wouldn't give up Girard, period. He's a core player.

Nor would I even trade for a goaltender right now. Our goaltending situation is fine, and we don't need to trade assets for marginal improvements. I'd rather just keep what we have and then introduce Annunen in a couple of years, he looks real good, very dialled in and mobile.

Best goalie in the world and nobody wants him. Completely floored. He's totally relevant for the next 5 years. Cap space is not an issue here.
