flat cap

Description
Goalie situation is obviously the #1 priority this offseason. I believe due to the flat cap and impending expansion draft, Murray will be dangled HARD. Next priority would be to clear more cap space via a team that has it, i.e. Ottawa. Then the Pens can sign RFAs and address the bottom pair on D. DeMelo would be a great add and the Pens could retain Riikola and have him and POJ play it out for the 3LD spot. Ruhwedel has also played OK the last couple of years. If Sheary is open to it, there is probably room for a one year contract (need to save room next year for Marino's next contract). If they could pull all this off, the Pens would be in a great spot to compete despite the flat cap.

Seems expensive but IMO paying to get rid of Bjugstad and JJ is a MUST for the Pens to compete for championships for the next 2 years.

Pretty much the right price to dump a contract look at the Toronto trade to dump Marleau they had to give up a 1st as well!

Count me in for the sens trade. 2 years of Bjugstad is manageable but 4 years of Johnson is... yikes. However, despite the health concerns, Hallander is a good prospect and together with a late first next year there’s enough value for Ottawa to take this on.

Massive. Jugs can be traded without paying anything. Johnson may need a sweetener but not that much

Not a good comparison. Toronto needed to move cap in order to sign Marner. They also needed someone that would be willing to buy out Marleau, as opposed to playing him, so that he could sign in San Jose. They were 100% against the wall with the Marner cap need, and they needed someone to do just pay Marleau and walk away or Marleau may not have waived his NMC.

The Pens do not need the cap space like Toronto did, neither has a NMC, they don't need anyone to be willing to just buy the guy out.

Yeah, but Bjugstad only has 1 year left and Johnson 3.

Plus, the Penguins coaching staff actually likes Johnson.

It may not be the same situation but the fact remains if you want to move a contract or in this case 2 your going to have to pony up a high level pick or two. Although I do agree that Bjugstad could be moved without a sweetener but JJ would absolutely have to have sweetener perhaps not a 1st per say but maybe a second or third

So, we went from Hallander and a 1st being the right price to just maybe a 3rd in a half of an hour...?

Good stuff.

In a perfect world they hopefully do a one-for-one with Bjugstad for a bottom pair RHD with 1 year left on his contract, then find a partner to dump JJ, even if they have to retain a bit of salary, and hopefully, trade Murray for a potential top-6 RW. Its doable, but GMJR has his work cut out.

All of capfriendly is so sick and tired of this debunked logic.
Yeah it costs a 1st to move gudbranson too remember that old diddy!

Just delete this mess, it's awful.

Furthermore people can stop asking on Hållander They aren't trading him. He's probably their 3C next year.

My bad, forgot the trade would be happening in the off-season. But regardless it comes down to appetite. How badly does Pittsburgh want to get rid of one year of Bjugstad and three years of Johnson? Toronto paid a 1st round pick last season to get rid of Marleau at 6.25M for one year. Pittsburgh is getting rid of 16M between the two of them over 3 years. If they really needed to, I could see this deal happening but again, that depends on how badly they need them gone.

I already explained that the Toronto/Marleau comparison doesn't hold water.

If Bjugstad is healthy he is actually rather decent, if hurt he is on LTIR.
The Pens coaches actually like Johnson.
Therefore, not badly at all.
