Framework of a Domi trade for every team

Created by: Kotkaniemi15
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 10, 2020
Published: Sep. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are pieces that I would be willing to move Domi in a deal for. Most of them are probably not available from the teams they’re on, but I just took out the obvious untouchables. And Montreal would obviously need to add more to acquire most of these pieces.

Any teams that aren’t included are teams that clearly wouldn’t be interested in Domi.
Trades

  1. Reinhart, Sam [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:

As it’s going to be with most of the 1sts here, it depends on how willing the GM is to move their first, and what they think of the players that are available where they’re picking. If I were in charge of the Sabres I wouldn’t trade my 1st, but I can’t speak for their actual management.

As for Reinhart, this could work out well if the Sabres are interested, since they’re both RFAs and the same age, with similar production. Reinhart fits Montreal’s needs more as a winger, while Domi is a C that it seems Sabres fans want.
    2.
    CGY
If he’s available I’d happily move Domi in a package for him.
      3.
      CBJ
I doubt the Blue Jackets would be interested, but if they wanted to add a centre to play behind Dubois, Bjorkstrand is the only player I’d be interested in (that might be available).
        4.
        MTL
        1. Addison, Calen
        2. Dumba, Matt

Things I said about Buffalo’s 1st apply to this first as well.

Dumba is a pipe dream. I love him, but it’s unreasonable to believe that Domi + anything that isn’t significant would be able to get him.

Addison would be a RHD prospect we’d be interested in, although I doubt he’s available, and I don’t know what else the package would consist of.

            NYR
Looks like they’d be interested, but nothing that’s available really works for a Domi trade.

                  1. Ehlers, Nikolaj

Things I said about Buffalo’s 1st apply to this first as well.

I know Jets fans want us to pay a ridiculous amount to get Ehlers. Positionally, Domi for Ehlers makes sense for both teams, but I don’t know how much the habs would need to add, or how willing the Jets are to move him.

Vesalainen is an interesting piece that could be part of a package to get Domi.

If you want that package from Winnipeg, you are going to need to add the sun and moon. Plus.

Did you guys understand he talks about pieces and not the whole package? Clearly stated

Domi-Reinhart is intriguing. MTL would need to add,

Reinhart is as good as Domi so, this being a framework, the 1st is unnecessary. It's an intriguing idea, but I'm keeping Reinhart if at all possible as the Sabres need to add, not just add and subtract. I'd be more open to dealing the 1st round pick.

If in any way possible, I'm looking to deal futures (1st round picks on the table, etc) and from the D core where we have a surplus, before I remove one of our only top 6 forwards.

I think DeAngelo could be a fit for you guys if you move Petry (since you don't want 3 highpaid RHD) but I'd rather go after Danault than Domi.

I’m not touching DeAngelo. If a player that played exactly like him in a vacuum were available I’d be interested, but not him.

And Danault would cost more than Domi, and there’s still nothing that I see on your team I’d be willing to trade him for.

1 of the 3 pieces. But if it’s Vesalainen, I’d obviously need more coming back.

That’s fair. We’re not really interested in any of your D, so it would probably need to be a deal around the 1st round pick.

Reinhart > Domi so no thanks. Domi isn't worth 8th OA either

Really? I’m mostly just going off the stats, since I obviously don’t watch the Sabres other than when they play the habs. Do you think that he would put up more or less points on the habs than he would on Buffalo (since he’d be on a better team, but he wouldn’t have Eichel).

I know Montreal fans think the every team will be willing to overpay for Domi, but for Winnipeg Ehlers and the first are not in play for 2 years of Domi.

I did say that I don’t expect most of these pieces to be available for Domi, but you never know. And if he were traded to the Jets Domi would obviously stay with a team that has an intense an loyal fan base where he can play 2C on a young and talented team. The only reason Domi will probably sign a 1 year deal is because he wants to prove himself, not because of a lack of loyalty.

I'm lately most interested in the Sabres dealing for more of a traditional 3C, say Andrew Copp, who I suspect due to the cost may be a better value bet for the Sabres. Using him as a stop gap 2C (defensively reliable) may be an avenue afforded to us by the presence of Cozens. If we upgrade at W in the top 6 to balance out.

All depends on cost. If Domi can be had for futures and non-top 6 assets, it's probably something that's going to work, even if it's not the preferred option - almost anything is better than Botterill's lack of action the past 3 years. As for your question - I'd imagine Reinhart would put up around the same on the Habs as he is in Buffalo. He's established as a pretty surefire ~ 60 point player. First line RW production - and he doesn't miss games, that's the rub.

He plays with Eichel, but the advanced metrics show he doesn't suffer much of a drop off away from him, and both Reinhart and Eichel benefit each other statistically. Not playing with Jack would probably be made up for by the overall strength of the Habs F unit.

If Domi only signs a one year deal, then Montreal is in a lot of trouble. That would put Domi only one year from UFA with arbitration rights and really tank his value. I think Montreal would be better off trading him without a contract to a place where he wants to stay long term, rather than sign him to a one year contract.

I peg the Jets as more likely to give up the goods in a deal for a 2C. They are pretty barren at C, and unlike the Sabres don't have a prospect like Cozens (crossing fingers) who projects out as a bonafide top 6 C. They have to maximize that Wheeler contract before it gets ugly - their window is right right now.

tbh, I'm not sure a lot of teams want to touch Domi at all....

He's made it pretty clear he exclusively wants to play C, and I'm not sure of a ton of teams who are going to trust him to be their top 6 C defensively and pay him around the 6 mil he probably wants. His value is similar to Dylan Strome at this point,

I mean there's only a handful of teams that have an open spot at 2C, have the cap space, and would be fine with his D: Buffalo, Rangers, Winnipeg, I'm struggling to think of others past that, Columbus Minnesota and Dallas don't really work with his risky style of play and I don't think Florida wants to pay him. So yeah there's maybe 3 teams that would be legitimately interested. That's going to drive the price down not up. Most likely looking at a late 1st or equivalent.

Yup, those are very legitimate concerns. For me the biggest concern is Domi changing his agent. He now has an agent that specializes in getting his client overpaid or forcing his way to UFA through arbitration if he can't get a large overpay on a contract. Not Very appealing options to teams willing to trade for Domi.

Well if we sign him, then we’re going to keep him, so it doesn’t matter what his trade value is. And like I said, he’s a loyal player, and if he’s paid fairly he’ll sign with his team.

Yeah adding Ferris on top of everything drives the price down even more... I don't think anyone wants to sign Domi for over 6 mil given all of the above concerns. Given how Ferris dealt with Marner, AA and Josh Anderson, it's a giant red flag.

He's made it clear that he really only wants to play top 6 C though. He sulked super hard when he got moved to wing and down the lineup. I don't think anyone would say he's "loyal". He's not signing long term as long as KK/Suzuki are here. Which means.... he's not signing long term.
