Why would the Pens do this? Their 1C 2C duo has been doing damage for years, to replace one of them with a winger seems odd.

Malkin has been in the league for 15 years, makes $9.5mil/season (highest on the team) and has only produced more than 85 points in a season 4 times. 3 out of the last 4 years he's barely made 70+ points. He's a high valued asset that can be moved even with his big contract. Time for the Pens to start thinking about the future instead of hanging on to the past. Next on my list would be Letang. The only "core" player from 5 years ago that will never be moved is 87. Everyone else it's time to part ways. IMO

Yea i thought about that after I did this. Obviously, Pens would have to add either a retention, pick or prospect to get a cap dump from VGK

alright (gonna skim by you breaking malkin down into just point totals)... so using what you just said.. how does trading malkin for a worse player, makes their c depth weaker, and they get zero futures in return make them better now and in the future?

Answer: it doesnt

I mean, when you say "he barely made 70+ points", you make it sound like he's not pulling his weight. But in reality, he's over a PPG in each of the last 4 seasons and has 316 over his last 263 games across those 4 seasons. He has been injured pretty consistently over that time, but you can't really say he's declining in play when he's still that dominant. Just needs to stay healthy.

Has ONLY produced more than 85 points? Wow, there's 31 teams that would kill for that production.

He's making 1-2M less than 60 point Matthews and Marner...

Also hes clearly mis rep'ing Malkin as a lot of this duration Malkin has stepped up and performed fantastically when Crosby is away, when the pens need him to he steps up. Malkin also doesnt even play with Crosby so theres no "crosby helps him" argument he actually trys to outperform a HOF historic player

look as his linemates - he pulls his weight

The problem with this trade is Vegas is not trading because he is not worth the cap, it is because they are over the cap and need to.shed cap to get under the cap ceiling. This trade does not do that, it adds 2.5 million to their cap and puts them in a worse condition, cap wise. If they trad ePacthes they want to take less cap back not more.

This is not saying that Malkin is bad or better or worse than Patches just a cap issue that puts the kibosh on this deal.

Patches isn't available, Vegas says No because it doesn't help their cap situation. And Pittsburgh says No because Makin is worth more then Pacioretty.

I like that you've tried to diminish Malkins impact by stating he's only hit more than 85 points 4 times, but seemed to ignore the fact that he has been more than a ppg player in every single season except one (10 years ago). He has the same a mount of seasons with 30+ goals, if your argument is that Patches is a goal scorer. And your solution is to trade him for a winger who has never hit that mark in any season, who's only advantage is that he is two years younger.

Want to look to the future and really want to trade him? Try picks and prospects.

How are you supposed to come up with a "constructive response" to Malkin for Pacioretty?

I like it!!! This puts Vegas $3.5M over the cap, so Vancouver could trade Jordie Benn to Vegas for Shea Theodore (and we'll throw in this year's 3rd rounder too) to help them get back compliant.

Get it done!
