Too much. He's doing well on a bad Red Wings team and would probably cost a 1st + prospect without retention. They'd be looking at a 1st + 2nd + two prospects in this case.

depending on who the prospects are I would consider that.

So basically what would it take to get a super valuable asset without giving up anything of value?

If you're making a cup run you typically don't want to trade the primary players on your team and are instead giving up futures, something that the Red Wings would be more interested in than a roster player on the Leafs given their situation.

So usually when you’re making that cup run (spoiler, the leafs aren’t), you target rentals. Not guys under team control.

Tyler Bertuzzi at 50% retention would cost Toronto far more then what Dubas would be willing to give up, that's for sure Bertuzzi isn't going anywhere anytime soon. He was our hottest player until his injury with 7 points in 9 games.

I wouldn’t put either of those players in the category of bertuzzi. Bertuzzi is the kind of guy a struggling franchise views as a core piece moving forward. Ritchie and kase were spare parts.

It also makes no sense for Toronto. You can probably get pretty good dman with less than it would take to get Bertuzzi. Or good back up goalie. But F that lets and more forwards.

So it would make more sense to get someone under team control for several years instead of wasting big assets on a UFA.

I don't think Toronto has the assets to get Bertuzzi at 50% (especially if Sandin and Robertson can't be involved), but it makes more sense to overpay for an RFA instead of a UFA.

Of course its better to get a younger player under team control, but on the other side of the coin, those guys have more value. So this post saying that anyone in the top nine, and the interesting prospects are off limits kind of means the only option is a UFA rental.

The problem is Liljegren isn’t really valued to us since we have Hronek, Seider, Stetcher, and Lindstrom. Mid to late picks in the hopes we get another Bert? That doesn’t seem too appealing. Detroit needs LHD + C and that leaves Sandin as the likely base and go up from there.
