A Smart Trade Deadline

Team: 2020-21 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 8, 2021
Published: Mar. 8, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This lineup will still suck but at least we get a look at some younger guys and get some return on a few expiring contracts. To those trading Eichel, Dahlin & Reinhart... F you
Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Ennis, Tyler
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
This is not a trade to bring back Ennis, but one to take back some money to make it easier for the Oilers. Oilers get a veteran center for their playoff run. Sabres get a 3rd round pick in 2022 which is better than nothing. Poor Ennis is a UFA next year so it's a wash for us.
2.
BUF
  1. Calvert, Matt
  2. Ranta, Sampo [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Calvert is both a money dump for the AVS and another exiring contract. He's injured right now but will be back. I wanted the Sabres to sign him a few years ago. He's an actual hard working bottom six forward who can occasionally product points... Ranta is doing well in college in Minnesota. Avs have a lot of solid prospects and losing him wouldn't be the end of the world.
COL
  1. Montour, Brandon
  2. 2023 5th round pick (BUF)
3.
BUF
  1. 2021 6th round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Back to where he's had recent success. Sabres take back a little money and get a late draft pick for him
VGK
  1. Eakin, Cody ($950,000 retained)
4.
BUF
  1. Cotton, Jason
  2. 2021 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Rights to Center prospect Luke Henman. Sabres take back 3 million to make this work. Hall may be slumping along with every other Sabres player not named Reinhart, but he's still a top line LW able to produce. The money retained allows us to secure the 1st rounder and two prospects. Henman, a promising center prospect for the QMJHL who will be in the AHL next year and Cotton. A solid center prospect in his own right who is excelling in his first year in the AHL and can contend next year for a spot on the team
CAR
  1. Hall, Taylor ($3,000,000 retained)
5.
BUF
  1. Dansk, Oscar
Additional Details:
There's not an immdiate upgrade at goaltender that will happen at the deadline. Instead, I'm trading for a fringe NHL'er who has had some nice numbers. He's a UFA next year and we can get a look at him to see if he's worth bringing back. Johansson is given in exchange so they have someone for their AHL club. Hutton to taxi squad whenever Ullmark comes back
VGK
  1. Johansson, Jonas
  2. 2021 7th round pick (BUF)

Montour doesn't do much for the Avs when they're healthy. He'd be the 7th defenseman and losing Calvert creates a hole.

He's better than Renouf, Pateryn, MacDonald and Graves

Calvert is less of a whole when he's not doing anything for you at the moment

Sabres either need to retain 50% or take Chiasson back.

I'd be more into upgrading the pick to the 2022 2nd if the Sabres both retained and took back Chiasson or Turris.

Right, and when the Avs are HEALTHY (keyword there), the only relevant player on that list is Graves. He's being groomed for our primary PK defender, so again, doesn't make much sense to trade him.

I agree that Calvert isn't what he used to be, but he's a big locker room guy. I also love Ranta's game right now and would hate to lose him.

Vegas says no thank you. His success was under Gallant, he struggled under DeBoer which is why part of the reason they moved him to Winnipeg

That's cause Teuvo's concussion, oh AND the Canes are one of the best teams in hockey with McGinn on the 1st line AND McGinn is outproducing Hall right now... Canes don't need hall.

You are the perfect representation of annoying Canes fans. Thinking you don't need Hall is hysterical and narrow minded. Yes you're a very good team... Adding a top line goal scoring LW who would be great for your style of hockey for your best shot at a cup this year is probably not a bad idea...

Even though you retain on Eakin, and it only costs a 6th rounder, he's not a difference maker and will not fill a need for VGK. Paying him $1.3M for this year and next year is not money well spent. In FA there will be better guys available for $750K. In fact, even right now a guy like Brian Boyle (just an example) could likely be acquired for the league minimum.

Any moves that Kelly makes will be difference makers I believe.

Reinhart has one more year of team control and then he enters UFA elgibility. He is far more realistic to trade than Jack Eichel right now, as much as I hate to say it. Plus with Reinhart's current contract, teams may be far more willing to take on his cap hit of 5.2 million.

Also, id much prefer to take back Zack Kassian or Kharia over Ennis because the team actually could use a physical player like that

Ennis is a pending UFA who is scoring at exactly the same rate (0.35 P/GP) as Staal is this year. It makes no sense to have him in the deal at all... Turris I'd understand, but not Ennis. Chiasson has a place on the team, I don't see him moving in the deal either.

What say you is Chiasson's role exactly? Puljujarvi is the better piece to have on the top powerplay, Neal can be used on the second unit in tandem with Yamamoto, and Kassian should be the 5v5 piece to have on the #3RW. Archibald follows naturally at #4RW. A left side of Kahun-RNH-Neal-Ennis doesn't leave room for Chiasson except for as a scratch, and Nygard should be in consideration on this roster somewhere.

I see him as a piece with nonzero value - he's worth something - but more as an opportunity to move money in the scope of a deal where Edmonton gets a better player back.

Until someone wins the spot, Chiasson is the 3rd line RW. He and Haas have been excellent, sporting a 59 CF% and 65 xGF% together. He's currently Edmonton's 7th best forward by P/GP.

David Cotton has a point per game in the AHL. Jason Cotton played one game and got 0 points. You got the brothers mixed up, so if I were Waddell, I would smash the accept button before you could even think about that, because we give a prospect with a 4th line ceiling right now and a late 1st in a shallow draft for a Was-Once superstar with retained salary who we could turn around and use him as a valuable asset for our playoff run.

You are a typical buffalo fan. Thinking about only production and not understanding the wider picture. Carolina's top 6 is perfect right now Svechnikov - Aho - Teravainen, Niederreiter - Trocheck - Necas are two lines that can kill teams. Hall is not a 3rd liner. Carolina do not need Hall. Someone that might be more of-interest would be Eric Staal who can play on the wing of Jordan. Hall doesn't fit the mould.

At 5v5 Chiasson is Edmonton's 5th highest scorer (P/60), so it's not just PP success. He has scored more than guys like Puljujarvi, Nugent-Hopkins, Kahun and Kassian, while being in and out of the lineup and always in the bottom-6.

Is his s% above career numbers? Asking, in the middle of a petrophysics lecture.

I know Nuge is snakebit to all hell and Puljujarvi started off that way. I'm disappointed that Kassian's been so ineffective since he signed his extension.

A bit, yes. But he's shooting less than usual too, these things should balance out over time. If nothing else Chiasson is great injury cover, whereas the Turris experiment has been a complete failure. I'd rather include Turris in the deal and keep Chaser through to the summer. I don't think he gets re-signed anyhow.

I would hope he is better than 2 career minor leaguers and a guy they buried. Better than Graves is debatable but doesn’t change the fact they have no need Montour but a glaring problem at the back up goalie and more pressing need in getting 3C production are FAR more important than adding a guy that would at best be a 3rd pairing guy.

3rd round pick Staal has retained salary done. Edmonton is low on skilled LW they can’t part with ennis. Chiasson is exactly who teams load up on for the playoffs you want him to be able to step in if Kassian or Archibald goes down.
