Zadina alone isn’t getting that done.

What? You aren't sold on an unproven youngster in exchange for a legit 1st pair D, straight up?

When they traded Johansen for Jones, Jones was pretty unproven

I’d take it if I was Detroit. Zadina is a great young player with lots of potential, but Girard fills a big need for a young top 4 LHD. This trade would provide a solution on the left side both before and after Edvinsson makes the team. Berggren should pick up the slack on RW.

Do u think it’s fair or Detroit needs to add a bit?

You'll have to be more specific because neither name is ringing a bell - Johansen and Jones who and how does it relate to the Avs?

nashville traded a young seth jones (i think with only a year of nhl experience at that point) to columbus for ryan johansen (who at the time was considered a solid 1C) one for one. this would be a similar trade but the opposite way - a young, unproven winger for a more established defenseman when the team has a surplus

I think Detroit would have to add a pick, maybe a 3rd. This is pretty similar to the Johansen - Jones trade you mentioned, except the positions are switched when considering how proven they are in the league.

If this trade actually happened, I could see Girard being great for Detroit and Zadina sputtering out, and I can also see Girard stagnating and Zadina breaking out. A one-for-one might be more even outcome-wise, but I see more even trade value if Detroit adds a bit.

Also curious to see if Colorado ends up with a line of Newhook-Hertl/Trocheck-Zadina

Too risky for the avs. If they move girard it’s for a batherson type.

Hmm. At the time of that trade, Johansen was in the midst of his 5th NHL season and already had 89 NHL goals to his name - not world-beating but not bad. Zadina has played in parts of 4 seasons and has a grand total of 17 NHL goals. I can't help but think more should be coming back the Avs way in a deal like this given that, while he has some promise, Zadina hasn't yet done all that much at the NHL level.

I like the creativity but have two issues from Colorado's side:

1. As others have said, it's too risky. Girard is a proven commodity on a great contract. Zadina is a wild card with both performance and contract uncertainty.
2. The Avs, although they don't look it at the moment, are very much in win now mode. If they move out 5M, I would think they'd be more inclined to do it for a Hertl or Forsberg (so long as they can re-sign them).

Lastly, I think the only reason they even considered moving Girard (assuming that's even true) was that it was Eichel. I doubt they move him for anything less than a huge haul or a truly elite player.

Zadina been inconsistent so far but still flashes high end ability, still think he'll be a solid top 6 F when he matures a little more. Yzerman doesn't seem to be a big fan of the smaller D-men anyway so Wings respectfully decline
