The trade below is not final

Comment what you would add or substract.

I feel like Trouba's contract is terrible - but it could be related to playing on a terrible team (rebuilding team)

I know hes got an NMC - but lets assume that MTL is not on his no-trade list

He has a full NMC, and didn't want to play anywhere except NYR, so they're probably stuck with him. Even if he did decide to waive, it probably wouldn't be to Canada

NMC means Trouba can decline literally any trade until 2024-25 when the NMC becomes a M-NTC. He nitpicked New York, so I have a hard time believing he'd waive for another Canada team.

It would really help the Rangers' long term cap situation to do it. Savard is a decent similar replacement. But, I don't know. As a fan of both teams I don't really think it makes much sense either way. Trouba is definitely overpaid by 1-2million AAV, but has been adapting himself to play a good brand of hockey that the Rangers want. I just don't see how it helps MTL in any fashion. NYR would likely need to add simply from the overpay standpoint. From there it really just depends. If I could understand why MTL would want to do this, maybe I could judge better... but for now, it just doesn't make much sense for MTL, unless there are more adds from NYR

The big reason he wanted out of Winnipeg is he did not want to be in Canada. That has not changed. The Rangers would love to dump his contract. But he’s not waiving for a Canadian based team. Any of them, under any circumstances.

You are thinking of Fox, Trouba doesn’t care if he’s with NYR or not, he just doesn’t want Canada. He really wanted Detriot.

Bad deal for NYR, (Chiarot as a UFA is worth more seperately somewhere else) but more importantly with all those long term MTL contracts and Suzuki's extension coming in, how do you fit it in?

You'd not re-sign Lehkonen and Kulak, still dressing borderline semi-nhlers in evans/niku/wideman and yet you'd still need to move somebody like Armia.

Trouba (not at 8mil) might be a nice add, but MTL just cant afford it

There is a big difference between Winnipeg and MTL... He would also be in Quebec, who is very different than the rest of Canada.

He would be in a big hockey market, pay around the same taxes and have almost the same weather. (plus being paid in US dollars, but living in CAD.)

You wouldn't compare Boston to Louisville would you

Thats not true Trouba wanted to play in the US because his Fiancé is now doing her residency. The Rangers made the best offer. Fox was the player that would only play for the Rangers.

The market is not the issue. Canada is. There were family issues, border crossing issues. He only wants to live in and play for US baseed team. It’s well documented.

I’m well aware that Fox would only play for the Rangers (felt so good watching him get booed throughout a 6-0 Flames win the other day lol) but I thought Trouba was in a similar boat where the Rangers were his much preferred team. I knew that he didn’t want to play in Canada, but I thought his fiance was doing her residency in New York so that’s where he really wanted to be. If anywhere in the USA was fine he probably would’ve just asked for a 7-team NTC to rule out Canada and demanded a higher AAV in exchange.

I don't even think he even wanted Detroit. He gave Cheveldayoff a list of teams where he would re-sign (otherwise the return would be a rental return)... and that list had just one team on it according to the TSN insiders, Jets beat reporters and Trouba's article in The Players Tribune at the time. The impressive part was that it did not leak until after the trade.
