I don't see why the Pens are moving Dumo, not even a little bit. That said, the conversation would start with a 1st in any trade.

The Oilers trade is TERRIBLE.

You want us to give up a younger version of Dumo (big, fast, rangy, not too physical given his size) with a way higher ceiling for potential, a forward who can slide up and down the lineup, PLUS a 2nd rounder for an older version of Broberg (and a Broberg that would not have lived up to his top 10 draft selection at that) and a 4th. Yikes.

So I like Dumoulin as a player I was think during the game the other day that he’d be a nice addition.

You are extremely off the track if you think Broberg is even mentioned in the conversion for Dumoulin. He’s a high pick who’s been developed properly and just at the start of his career.

Broberg is near untouchable right now. Only way he's included in a trade is if it's for someone that is a long term solution but that's unlikely at best.

In the not too distant past, Mattias Ekholm was rumored to be available at the cost of a top-end prospect and two high draft picks. The 2021 playoffs had just concluded, and he had one full season left under his contract, which included a salary of $3.75M. Brian Dumolin is a pretty good comparable with Ekholm, although I suggest the latter is a marginally better all around defenseman than the former. Dumoulin brings a slightly bigger cap hit than Ekholm, but he could be available for a playoff run and then remain under team control for one more season. A 2nd round draft pick, a high-end prospect, and a roster player who fits a need for Pittsburgh does not seem to be an unreasonable ask, at least not in comparison to what Dave Poile is rumored to have been asking for Ekholm prior to the last draft day. Of course Ekholm wasn't traded, so there is that to consider as well.

This could be a very enticing opportunity for Ken Holland, if Dumoulin agrees to the trade; heading into the playoffs with a top 3 LD consisting of Nurse, Dumolin, and Keith looks pretty solid. However, I don't think the Oilers can agree to pay what you are asking. I can't argue the draft pick, but I think Samorukov or Niemelainen are the LD prospects that would be made available, I doubt Holland wants to trade Kassian, and I don't think Pittsburgh would have interest in any of the forwards Edmonton can afford to part with. Acquisitions of players with term are going to be difficult for the Oilers, given the unknown regarding new contracts for Puljujarvi, and Yamamoto, and how Holland is able to replace or resign Koskinen.

From the perspective of an Oilers fan, the ideal Dumoulin deal might look a bit like: (1) Edm 2022 2nd round draft pick + Dmitri Samorukov + Slater Koekkoek to Pittsburgh, Edm 2022 5th round draft pick to a third team, (2) Pittsburgh sends Dumoulin to third team, perhaps along with Pitt 2022 5th round pick, (3) third team retains 50% of Dumoulin's salary and sends him to Edmonton.

The net impact for Pittsburgh is about $3.2M in extra cap space next season, an extra 2nd round ick in a deep draft year, a serviceable depth defender capable of playing either side, and a very good near-NHL-ready LD prospect who plays a game similar to Dumoulin's but perhaps with a bit more physicality. The Oilers acquire a veteran two-way LD with lots of playoff experience, for a net reduction of roughly $1M in cap space next year. The third team takes on $2050000 in salary cap hit in exchange for a couple of 5th round picks.

Highly doubt the Blues pay all that, but you're at least close enough that they'd sit down and haggle.
