Sorry, Seattle isn't going to give up three picks for Trochek...extension or not. They keep their picks and use that cap space to sign a UFA.

Definitely don’t mind that cat trade, the only issue is the players. I know Suzuki, but I don’t know the other two, how would you grade them prospect wise or otherwise.

To be fair though, cat has to know that the hawks aren’t competing for another decade at least. Not having this year’s 1st set us back two or three years as well. Once Kane and toews are gone. This team is gonna be in a tougher spot than even now.

They really should maximize Kane’s return by trade especially this year. Get a 1st and a few good prospects and guys they can flip next year

100%. Completely agree with all of this, but is there a GM smart enough to do this is the question.

Ponomarev is fairly high up on the canes prospect totem pole. Personally speaking, I have always been rather high on Ponomarev, and my comparison is to another Canes prospect in Drury. Ponomarev has a slightly higher floor than Drury in my opinion, but has a slightly lower ceiling than Drury. Canes are very unlikely to trade Drury, and I have never been completely sure on the future of Suzuki, whether he is in a canes jersey or not.

Keane on the other hand, is a RHD drafted by the Rangers and acquired by the Canes by trading Gauthier. It was a positional trade to help both teams. Keane has been consistently above .50 points per game in the AHL, and is looking like he is close to being ready to make the jump to the NHL. If I had to compare Keane to another canes prospect, it would probably be Lajoie, who is currently playing with the Canes as a call up due to COVID protocol. It is currently looking like Hiemosalmi will end up being better in the future than Keane, but Keane will likely crack the NHL before Heimosalmi.

Keane if needed, could probably provide immediate help on the blue line, and Suzuki might be ready for an NHL role by next season, and Ponomarev might be ready next year, but will most likely end up taking at least 2 more years to develop.

It doesn’t have to be the Kraken. I firmly believe that they will build their core through the draft over the next few years. I might say that the Pens would be a more likely candidate for Trocheck’s services as they are looking to try to stay competitive while Crosby and Malkin are still in the going strong. Personally, if we don’t end up resigning Trocheck, I would much rather ship him out to the western conference, but if he goes to the pens or another eastern conference team via trade with an extension, one of the seconds will likely become a first rounder.

Not a contender corner though, a stability corner. And no matter what any of us think, it isn’t gonna happen before toews and Kane leave. After that, hello darkness our old friend.

One of the big problems with "trades with extensions" is that in this case, Carolina management has to tell/ask a top player. "We want your ass outta here. So hurry up and sign an extension so why can trade you to Seattle." So when if the player says no, then the team Carolina in this case, has say to Trochek, "No hard feelings, now we want for our team for a Cup run."

UFAs come and go all every year. Contending teams, don't worry about players leaving, those teams are trying to win now. Actually contending teams often acquire upcoming UFAs to help them for hopefully a long Cup run.

I'll disagree that Hawks will be in a dark place when Kane and Toews leave. That's 21m they can spend elsewhere, hopefully wisely.

Well, think of it this way, at 75% of that goes towards Jones, cat, and Dach. So you got 5 mil left over. Gotta resign Hagel, kurashev, possibly kuba if they keep him, and even strome if they keep him, or borgstrom.

I get what you’re saying, but they got lots of money to repurpose to existing players unfortunately. They’re not gonna be in nearly as good a situation as it looks. Jones’ extension some is huge problem no matter how he turns out.

If and its a huge "if" the Cat was moved for a knockdown rebuild, you would have to add your best prospects not this. Your going for a cup, CHI knows that and would only move him for an unreasonable offer.

The middle two yes. Connolly too? TJ still has three years though. All I’m saying is this situation will more than likely play out like 2017-2019 did. Just adding pieces that don’t move the meter enough. Don’t forget this assumes we don’t resign Kane and toews, which would hamstring us further.

Certainly the Hawks would have a lot better off if they didn't trade for 9.8m Jones, and kept those young assets.
For a team to be contenders in a cap strapped league, they need ELCs and even RFAs playing above their contracts. You're right, do the Hawks have enough of these "cheap" players to be good and let some higher contracts either "walk" or get traded.

Yes the cap situation isn't great with that deal coming into effect next year, we don't have enough that are producing regularly. Hagel is probably the best we have that is on a good deal and plays above his contract.

Unfortunately for Suzuki, he's had a potentially career altering eye injury. He's playing again, but I don't think other teams are going to give the benefit of the doubt for his trade value until he proves it. None of those other prospects are worth it.

In order for the Hawks to sell their future...CAR would need to be sending back a future. Scott Morrow, Pyotr Kochetkov, and at least a 1st will be required. You don't realize how good the Cat is.
