We will keep Liljegren and the 1st round pick and leave Petry in Montreal for another GM to pick up.

No chance Toronto would include Liljren in a Klingberg trade. It would be Holl or Dermott

Toronto Declines the 1st trade & Dallas doesn’t even offer the 2nd trade. I’d be avoiding Petry like the plague if I were Jim Nill.

I would get him if we can get him without losing a single defenceman.

It would likely be neither. I think they want 8 NHL defenceman. Keep all we have but add Klingberg for a 1st and Robertson or something.

Even at 50% I think you need to send some cap back to make him fit. If you need an 8th dman there are plenty of under 1M options on expiring contracts that can still be effective as emergency replacements

That's Plan B yeah but the Leafs have more money available than this site shows. Capfriendly doesn't calculate accrued cap space. I read a while back that by waiving Ritchie, the leafs will have about 2.5 million in cap space at the deadline. Could be as high as 4.5 if they move Ritchie.

With Arizona wanting to add bad contracts for futures, maybe they will be interested in taking Ritchie for something. He'd likely make their roster since they are basically an AHL team right now. Could even rebuild some value to them. It's unlikely but not impossible.

Can't see the Leafs giving up Liljgren and a first for a PP specialist rental. That's just not money well spent. DAL will get a 1st and most likely a prospect for Kling, but it's gotta be a team that needs scoring help from the back end and someone to run the PP

Cap Friendly actually does account for accrued cap space and it adjusts daily. Maybe waiving Ritchie would have helped accrue them some cap space but every day that Liljegren is on the starting roster over the TS/Minors that eats away at that potentially available TDL space. If Muzzin were not on IR they probably would be accruing more cap space right now but that is not the case.

As for moving Ritchie, I personally don't see Toronto paying to do that. It's way more likely that they move one of Holl/Dermott this deadline, buy out Ritchie in the summer then move Mrazek after Campbell is extended (assuming Campbell extends ofc)

Klingberg is a puck moving dman that specializes in teams with high puck control. Calling him a PP specialist is not exactly accurate. He would probably excel in Toronto's system

I think they need to make a move here. They really should add another defenceman without taking anyone away (unless they also add a guy like Braun after upgrading over Holl) then look at a forward but I think that's highly unlikely. Maybe some 13th forward like Motte or something but they have Clifford who's essentially the same player.

In any event, this Leafs team is very good, they are in the hardest division in the entire league by a wide margin so getting past the 1st and 2nd round is going to be extremely difficult but this is the best team they have had in the Matthews era. A little more depth to weather the inevitable injuries that come and they have as good a shot as anyone. This is a year to make a run. Next year will be harder as the salary is going to be harder to manage.

That's how I see it too, and also why I see guys like Mayfield, or Manson or other "stay at home" defenceman as bad ideas. Those guys just don't have the skills necessary to handle Keefe's system.

Im personally still a fan of the trade I did a couple weeks ago (well adjusted trade from the comments section) where I added both Klingberg and that depth forward in Kiviranta

Mayfield I agree, you cant be adding someone slow. Manson or Severson aren't bad options though IMO

It cost us Holl right? I guess I'm not against it entirely but we would need to get a guy like Braun as well then.

I don't like Manson, he's almost entirely reputation. Been producing below average numbers for a few years now. He had a big playoffs and then a good year and has been pedestrian since. Severson is a great add though

Holl or Dermott, IMO it's Toronto's choice there on who to keep. Again have to make the cap work
