It’s funny that the Giroux trade both contradicts the title and is also not enough.

Did he say he wanted someone with term OR that essentially term wouldn't kill the trade?

Chicago trade isn't bad, I don't think they move him after just signing an extension though.

Severson is by far the best target for Toronto though, especially f they don't want a rental.

Ritchie should just be bought out, he will cost more than that to move (I would argue that 5th is worth around the same as the 2023 4th due to where they will fall and the 1 year gap)

Obviously no where remotely close to Giroux

Wishful thinking by Dubas. He may as well say "I'm looking for a player comparable to McDavid."

Remember when Lou would only accept a top pair Defenseman for Nylander?

He also praised Holl as of late and this person traded Holl...so I mean, well..

He reaffirmed what we all knew and said his preference is acquiring players with term (which is the smart thing, imo). He also very clearly left the door open for rentals though, specifically touching on the navigating the flat cap as part of the reasoning. People are just reading that quote and running with it.

Dubas also said he’d prefer to hold onto draft capital this year.
This guy traded our 1st rounder.

I can ensure you that you cannot retain on only the first year of a multi-year deal, but an extension is a new contract, so the retention would expire with his current contract.

Sorry, I don't see all this love for Murphy. And really the cap doesn't work with his 4.4m extension and Reilly 2m raise. If you think you can get rid of Mrzarek for cap reasons, Leafs don't have an NHL goalies next season. Right now the Leafs are paying 5.25m in goalies. Even Campbell if resigned and his backup don't come any cheaper than 5.25m, so certainly there is practicality in trading Mrzarek for cap reasons.

term is what hes looking for, obviously if a team came by and gave them a top 3 rhd for a cheap price hed take it but most likley if hes gonna move a first it will be a D man with term

You can't possibly be talking about that Chicago trade. It's grossly unfair for TO. Beyond public opinion based on absolutely nothing by dummies hating Holl for not being Chara in his prime, there isn't much evidence to show Murphy is even better than Holl based on contract numbers. The upgrade you get isn't worth double Holl's salary. It wouldn't be long before Liljegren likely surpassed Murphy and then you have a 3rd pair guy making 4+ million. That's not a good thing. So we are adding cap, and losing our top defensive prospect and a 1st for a more expensive lateral move. Bad trade.
