TDL for playoff push

Created by: Icedragon4405
Team: 2021-22 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2022
Published: Feb. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hertl later resigns with the islanders.

The islanders got destroyed by a bad start where
they had to play numerous games without half their normal team if they keep playing well and add at the TDL they can make the playoffs

Pls note: some of this is not realistic, but the overall point is that they should make a big move. To me one of their biggest needs is a high scoring D-man their D doesn’t put up many goals or points

They're not trading Pulock a few months after resigning him, much less for a rental that they have to throw in picks for.

Seattle is not giving up McCann for a non-prospect in Wilde, a rental in Clutterbuck, and two late picks.

Dobson is outperforming Subban at this point, so not sure why you'd spend any assets bringing P.K. in to shove Dobson down the lineup.

I feel like the islanders need more D scoring and I don’t think Klingberg and Subban specifically but they are 2 available. Pulock has not been great he isn’t a number 1 D-man which is something they don’t have

If the Sharks are going to trade Hertl, this is the deal I would want most. Also Tomas is a top PKer in this league and should be net front on the PP.

Pulock is better offensively than both Subban and Klingberg, he is also miles better overall than both of them, he's 100% a #! defenseman

So the sharks would get an unprotected 2023 1st since 2022 in top 10 protected?

The Hertl trade is a good idea IF he's guaranteed to re-sign.

I don't think that the Isles should trade Pulock for Klingberg even up. Re-signing both Hertl and Klingberg would put an enormous strain on cap management.

Why do you value Scott Mayfield so negatively?

Massive over pay for Klinger. Who would likely struggle in that system just like he struggles in ours

in terms of raw points, Pulock has outscored Subban the last 4 seasons combined (and yes that includes last season when Pulock couldn't buy a goal to save his life, and this season, when he's missed 25 games and only has 2 assists to date!)

Klingberg has stronger offensive numbers, but also starts nearly 60% of his even strength shifts in the offensive zone (Pulock's at about 45%.) He's also a UFA at the end of this year, unlike Pulock, who the team signed to an extension 4 months ago that doesn't kick in until next season. The idea that you would trade your top pair RHD who's signed to a pretty reasonable $6.15M AAV for a rental *and* throw in picks is a bit far-fetched.

Why the hell are the Isles trading Pulock? Seriously, he was snakebit last season and this year he was out for over 10 weeks. Guy's a stud and paired with Pelech they're the best overall defensive pairing in hockey. It's not even close- 64.4% HDCF and 71.05 HDGF%. And the Isles resigned Pulock and Pelech to long-term (and team-friendly) deals. Do the homework.

The Isles don't need Klingberg or Subban; they're developing Dobson and Salo, who both have taken huge strides this season. Frankly, I think management viewed this year (thanks to the 13 game road trip to start) as a transitional year (which is why they got Chara) and they're going all-in next season (they're going to make a huge push for Gaudreau). I also think all they really need is a decent stay-at-home defenseman (Ben Chiarot?) who can move the puck out of the defensive zone without much issue. Don't make a deal just to make a deal for a schnazzy name you saw on the hockey trade rumor mill. There's really no reason for the Isles to move off of Pelech, Pulock, Dobson, Mayfield, or Salo.

I wouldn't mind Hertl but I wouldn't move Raty for him.

I didn't even touch on that because the Pulock deal was so egregious, but that's also a crazy move. I know there's quite a few Islander fans who don't want to wave the white flag with 43 games left, but this team is in a tough spot. If Boston goes .500 the rest of the way, they finish with 94 points. The Islanders would need to play at a .651 points pace to just *tie* them. Put it another way: if the Islanders make the playoffs, it will be one of the more legendary playoff pushes in team history. It's not a season to go moving one of your prospects for a rental. I'd much rather do whatever cap maneuvering they can (trade Varlamov? Move one of the unmovable forwards?) to make a run at one of the Gaudreau/Hertl/Forsberg trio, and keep Raty & their 1st/3rd rounders.

Chiarot is terrible defensively , I think we need more of a two way defenseman, someone like Brett Kulak or Ian Cole. The isles have two of the top 10 defensive D in the league.

Gaudreau is really the only one worth pursuing. He's a superstar, but Forsberg is extremely overrated and he's going to have a Jeff Skinner type of regression next season. He's not shooting 23% again.
