Need change at deadline

Created by: pensfan21
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2022
Published: Feb. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Malkin needs better linemates. It's beyond time for Kapanen to go after being demoted again tonight. Failed experiment there. Zucker hasn't been as bad as Kapanen, but is not producing enough for someone paid as much as him. Casey DeSmith is a good enough backup, but not for a team thats contending for a cup.

Sometimes a change of scenery is needed. His current linemates have not really done anything so why not swap with some other players who may be struggling and give it a shot.

Why?

Dube is younger and has about the same upside if not better, plus we already got Toffoli so we don't really have a need for Cheeks Klapanen

Hughes has pretty much come out and said that he's not retaining on any of his players, There's sure noway he's retaining $2,500,000 on Gallagher for the next 5 years. Detroit accepts.

Chicago counters....Flowers + Kubalik for Kap, 1st round pick, and a cap dump with DeSmith.

Gallagher would probably be the last player Montreal would retain on, as his contract is the longest. Not even worth considering without retention for this return.
Could be similar to the Hornqvist pickup for the Pens, but cap is probably going to be tough to navigate.

There is no way the penguins are taking that awful Gallagher contract. None.

There is also no way anyone is giving up anything near that for MAF.

You would rather continue with Kapanen over trying with a new, young player?

Improving it. I don't see what it hurts us giving up Zucker, Kapanen, and DeSmith

Yeah I mean I definitely trust him and think he's goalie of the future, but every good cup team should try and have a good backup. It's more about not trusting DeSmith tbh

And truthfully the Pens would be foolish to take his contract on. It's a pretty awful contract.

I don't think it's worse than Zuckers...He's the type of player we need to add some physicality and net front presence, its basically swapping two bad contracts, but at least it's a new player with a good chance to have success

Kapanen is still better than Dube.

You're treating Heinen like he's as throw-in for a trade the Pens don't need to make. Heinen is on pace for almost 40 points and 20G!!! The Pens need to upgrade from DeSmith, sure, but we don't need MAF or pay that kind of price for anyone.

The Pens have one more year left of Zucker and you want to enter in to a worse contract?

Come on, man.

Zucker is done after next season. Gallagher is a nice player, but he's not worth his contract which goes on for way too long.

Yes because I believe Gallagher will help our team much more. I don't think keeping Kapanen is better than trying out a younger player like Dube. Kapanen has been atrocious, how many times does he have to be demoted from his line before something gives. I like him as a player and was very excited when we got him, but it hasn't worked out. It would benefit both us and him for a change of scenery. As far as Fleury I think it is smart to try and get him if we can, he's great for the locker room and would be great support for Jarry

Gallagher is 29 years old and signed at $6.5M for another five years!!! He's also regressed from being a 30ish goal scorer to a low 20's, which is fine if he made 30% less, but for a team like the Pens who need to keep Geno, Rust and Letang? That is an AWEFUL contract.

The MAF idea is just terrible. There's no defending that.

Think about this...

Jake Guentzel makes $6M
Rust is likely to get $6M

Gallagher isn't nearly as good as either of those players, makes more and is older. Just think about how this affects building the rest of the team properly and no, MTL is not going to retain on a contract like that.

Trading for Gallagher and MAF, especially with those proposed trades is just bad asset management.
