If nhl trades happened like nba trades

Description
In honor of the recent nba trade deadline I thought it would be a interesting concept to do mock nhl trades at the same value nba trades have (I chose the hawks cause they are rebuilding and have a lot of trade rumors)

These are obviously all a joke but I thought it would be pretty funny to compare

You put alot of thought and effort into this.

I don't watch enough of the NBA to know how accurate your comparable are, but nice work

Does anyone (including NBA executives and NBA team executives) understand the salary cap in the NBA, and how equal $$$ must be traded between one team and another.
Thanks for your analysis and the work you put into this. But like real NBA trades, it just gives me headache when I try to understand them.

The NBA uses a soft cap and hard cap, you can’t exceed the hard cap. But if you exceed the soft cap, you pay a luxury tax.

I absolutely love the take on these trades and the comparisons made here. This was a fun one to go over though. Good job

great approach. I too scratch my head at some of the trade values in the NBA and how they work around the luxury tax limit, mid level exceptions etc. Completely different system but interesting.

The value of picks is definitely alot different in the NHL than NBA, but I love seeing these comparisions.
Good stuff.

I'm not saying loyalty is a bad thing, but I'm all in favor of star NHL players chasing a cup BEFORE they hit 35+. I agree with everyone above that sometimes NBA trade values baffle me, but more top-end players moving around the game would be a good thing!

Great work on this!

Apples to oranges with double the roster size, at least quadruple the organization size and how much more of a team game hockey is than basketball. Team chemistry matters in hockey probably more than any other sport out there (with football and soccer being close runner-ups) and that kind of disruption alone is why these kinds of moves just don't make sense in the NHL (or any professional hockey league really).

It's a fun thought excercise though...

I think its a little bit of a two way street. Yes, the players are the ones signing long term contracts in bad situations (ex : Eichel) but the GMs are also very unwilling to make risky trades. Guys like Marner, Nylander, or Landeskog before signing his big contract get traded to switch around the chemistry of the team, see if theres another star player who fits the system a little better. It would be absolute chaos. I hope introducing a soft cap at some point in the future would help bring this about. I think the uncertaint rigidity of the cap definitely stops this a little bit, as people are unwilling to trade for big cap hits a lot more. We've seen a little bit of constant big game hunting from Vegas, hopefully other teams will start to follow suit.

I think one part that definitely makes it harder is our development system. The NBA draft is 2 rounds and the only developmental league that they can have guys playing in is the G league, whereas the NHL has a much larger prospect pool and top prospects mean a lot more (also due to salary cap and the value of ELCs). A lot to think about for sure

I get what you're saying about star players moving around more but it wouldn't work with hockey. In The NBA 5 good starters and a couple of solid subs is really all you need. In hockey with 2 good lines and 4 good defensemen doesn't even guarantee a playoff spot. The art of building an NHL roster that can go to and win multiple cups isn't just getting bunch of star players it's getting the right role players to fill out the rest of the roster.

It's some of the intricacies of the trade that confuse me. Take Raptors this season, they have upcoming UFA 18m Drarok on the roster, and they trade him, and an approximately 18 pick overall, for a player who they buy out, a 35th overall pick and spare part. The trade was made mostly because it gives the Raptors more cap flexibility next season.
Now, to the layman that is confusing. Despite the fact they were losing a 18m player next summer, it seems his current cap has implications for next season.

I agree to a point, the NBA takes it to the extreme, but I was more referencing the players like Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau who waited far too long and closed their window themselves. Stars sign 8 year contracts at the age of 29 regardless of what the trajectory of their team is and then end up going to FA at age 37, signing a league minimum with whatever team will take them, and retiring 2 years later. I would have rather seen Thornton, Marleau, Iginla.. etc switch teams at age 30-32 when they have 3 or so real good years left and actually make an impact with their new team.

I agree with that some players do wait too long to leave their team even though they can leave around 27. Thornton, Marleau, and Iginla were all on teams that were in contention when they were there.

You are right it would've been nice to see them win a cup.

Dude did you read the caption the whole point of this is that the trades are terrible since they are mock comparisons of nba trades which hold entirely different values of nhl trades
