An Out of the Box Defensive Idea

Description
Canes are scouting for defense and do not want to trade roster players. They are also heavily scouting Columbus. I wonder if their target is Peeke.

Bokk will never be an nhler and a first isn't the difference between Keane and Peeke

I think it's pretty open that Vladislav Gavrikov is who they want. I think Peeke could be a neat addition, but not at this price.

I think that the more likely player they are scouting is Gavrikov. Gavrikov ticks all the boxes that the Canes would want. Someone else brought up Nyquist, and while he would be a big add, I’m not sure the Canes would be able to fit him cap wise. Peeke would be another possible candidate, but I think the most likely players they are scouting (outside of Laine) would be Nyquist and Gavrikov. If Columbus is fine with a bunch of prospects and a couple picks as Carolina would be more willing to move certain prospects than some picks, I think a deal could be reached.

Ignore the package I wrote there. I'm trying to put some puzzle pieces together about what the Canes are scouting RN in Columbus.

What's with the Peeke love all of a sudden? Wasn't he exposed to Seattle and they passed? I do fully understand he's been playing with Werenski and Gavy...AND...this is good expereince for him. I'm not trying to say his career is over AT ALL...that would be dumb for me to say, but it's a far stretch to say he's the one driving that Dpair.

Massive Overpay for Peeke. BUT I'll also agree that Bokk isn't an NHLer.

Hes great. Hes playing good defense as a 23 year old, and his outlook is a future middle pair shutdown guy. He was also shining even before playing with werenski.

Hes the type of player you hope to draft with a late first, so no sense in trading him for one

tbh I think there's a less than 0 chance we move Gavy before next tdl unless there's a ridiculous overpay. Jarmo has said multiple times he wants him to help our other young Russians acclimate, and he's our only Dman who plays good D besides peeje

I won’t comment on value of peeke cuz I don’t think the track record is there to justify what our ask would be for peeke, but he was not passed over in the expansion draft. He was 23 at the time and that was young enough for exemption.

Don’t think it’s worth giving up peeke for a first at the weakest position for the jackets. He might not be worth more than a first for the canes but he’s worth more than that for the jackets

Yes, Peeke was exempt in the last Expansion Draft. I just think that he fits a lot of boxes that the Canes are looking for. The fact that he has another year on his contract, for one, but also that he's a right-shot and that he's so below-the-radar that there may not even be a set trade market for him. It just makes me wonder.

He’s not good enough yet for a contender to blow a first round pick for him (in a go for it year) but young enough and has the potential to be worth a lot more than a late first round pick. So both teams would decline moving peeke.

Carolina like many others are looking at Kukan, the price for Peeke and Gavrikov is too much currently, but Kukan is on an expiring contract and can play both sides. Columbus likely retains on him and gets a 2nd or 3rd.

Jarmo is wanting a 1st+ roster player for Texier and since RHD is a major weakness in the organization, with Boqvist being the only other RHD signed, Jarmo would ask for a 1st+ for Peeke.
