Offseason

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nothing crazy, the Letang signing could be risky cause he would be 38 by the end. MTL gets the PP QB we need a a great veteran for the young kids on D.
We get rid of Armia and Weber's contracts. ARI gets a contract to not worry about the cap floor and a usable player in Armia. MTL takes back a bad contract in Ladd that finishes the year after.
Hoffman is sent into the sun - SEA - a team that needs people who can score and can afford his contract.
For Petry I sent him to DET because they would need a vet D that could help the kids with the growing pains and take some heat off Seider. No idea about Newpower, just a exemple of a return.
I assumed first pick and Wright, if not just slide Evans on 3C and whatever winger we pick into the lineup.

This is the type of offseason I wouldn't be mad at, preparing for the future and getting rid of some money. I start Guhle and Barron together in the AHL, get some experience and don't rush them to the NHL.
Then, at the trade deadline, maybe move Drouin and Byron, maybe even Allen for more picks and prospects.

Detroit have no use for Petry. We're set at RD for the next decade.

If your argument for Arizona is they need to hit the cap floor, they can do that by overpaying UFAs or taking on garbage contracts while acquiring assets. Obvious bias from a Montreal fan there.

and of course Detroit definitely doesn't need Petry whatsoever.

Hitting the cap floor while spending less actual dollars. $7.8M cap hit, but only a $1M salary.
If you owned a struggling NHL team about to have some poor revenue on top of recent covid losses, would you "sell" a 2nd round pick for $20M in cash?

For the billionth time, Detroit isn't taking Petry and certainly isn't giving up ANY assets for a cap dump. That contract will cost a boatload to move and Detroit is moving past the cap dump acquisition phase of the rebuild.

Petry isn't a great fit at his age but Hronek and Lindstrom have both been terrible this year and to say Wings are set for next 10 years is kinda ridiculous

Petry has really struggled mightily recently and we have had our fill of struggling 30yo defensemen, if the Leddy experiment would have worked I might be open to trying with us getting a 2nd and not giving up anything but not anymore. Detroit passes and looks for a more useful cap dump from another team.

I have half a bucket of dry rotted pucks in my basement and I'm not sure I'd give all of them up for Petry.

It's a small group of Montreal fans that keeping posting Petry to Detroit trades. But it's that same group of fans that obnoxiously posted Mantha to Montreal, AA to Montreal and Bertuzzi to Montreal. You have to think they are getting tired of ALWAYS BEING WRONG.

"Lindstrom has been terrible" - are you kidding me?! Because a ROOKIE had some growing pains in the 2nd half, that somehow devalues everything he did in the 1st half of the year? He was easily Detroit's best defensive player in the first half and I think he's just hit a wall... The kid will be fine...

Hronek is 24 years old. Lindström is 23 years old. Seider is 20 years old. Petry is 34 years old.

Wich one of the three players we have would you dump to make room for Petry?

Regarding the play of Hronek and Lindström you're simply wrong.

Hronek had 3.07 giveaways per 60 minutes of icetime in 2018-19, in 19-20 it was 2.93, in 20-21 it was 1.42, this year it is 1.70. That is a clear improvement year on year, with an outlier last year when both his giveaways and takeaways differ from the rest of the years he's played (his takeaways are 0.59 this year and was 0.33 last year). Hronek is improving albeit slowly.

Lindström is playing his first full season and this year he has fewer giveaways (per 60) than he's had before and more takeaways. Lindström is also scoring at the same rate (in 5-on-5 play) as Moritz Seider is (0.91 points per 60 compared with 0.93). Lindström has had one bad game where he was -6, other than that game his +/- is the same as Seider this season.

Both Lindström and Hronek have also been paired with worse team-mates this season than they were last season. when they played with DDK who was a + player last season (he's far from that this year), Merril who was also a + player, and Djoos, Staal, Cholowski, Nemeth who combined were -20 that year. This year they have been paired with Leddy (-33), DDK (-11), Oesterle (-5), Walman and Renouf and Juolevi combines for -5. The only LD this year that is a + player is Staal (+5).

That makes for a combined -49 on the left side so far this year. Last year it was -15 combined for all the LD. That's a drop of 327% in +/- among the players that have been paired with our RD.

Hronek and Lindström have simply been exposed by bad partners this year and this is what's making them look bad. They're both in reality better than they have been in previous years and both are improving every year and there's nothing that says they won't continue to improve over the next decade.

There is no question that the left side defense is where the problems this team has lies. RD is not a problem now nor will it be in the future. With the right parters on the left both Hronek and Lindström will shine (in their own ways). Dumping on them now because they've been paired with invalids and has-beens and never-rans is wrong.
