all this would do for the habs is the same thing theyve been doing for years, make them beleive they are a contender but they are nothing more than a middle of the pack team, they should just take wright and not rush anything

any positive value that the Canucks get out of Shane Wright will be drowned by the 5 decline years of Brendan Gallagher at $6.5M

Both teams reject in my opinion. I think VAN can get gold prospects and picks for Miller and I highly doubt MTL trade the 1st overall when the draft is in MTL and also Miller is great but doesn't make them a contender so it's a pointless move for MTL to make, they've needed Centers for Years and if they draft Wright they will have Suzuki 1C and Wright 2C which will set them up for years.

Even if Miller agrees to an extension, he'd be too old for the Habs' next contention window in comparion to the top 2022 pick. Gallagher may not be a top 6 threat he was, his playstyle eases the transition into an (overpaid) third-line checking forward. Not sure about the later years of Miller's next deal.

I see where you're coming from, but this seems like a trade that both sides actually lose.

MTL is looking to accelerate their rebuild with Shane Wright, who absolutely fills their need at C.
They are not in a position to contend and trade for 1 season of JT Miller.
Habs decline easily.

VAN already has Pettersson and Horvat down the middle.
Potentially having Shane Wright as a 3C, wouldn't be great development for him anyway.
Canucks wouldn't consider this trade as well.

So Montreal gets out of a bad contract just in time to embark on a new bad contract and they give away a 1st overall pick in the process. Yes Miller's excellent but he's turning 30 and has likely peaked this past year so anyone dealing with him is likely gonna be on the hook for a max term contract (Or close) north of 8 million which in four years time will be trash. I'd stand ground hoping Gallagher comes back in a better shape after a full summer instead of the 10 weeks he had between the Stanley Cup's final game and the first exhibition of 2022 and banking on Wright coming in right away instead of grabbing Miller's last year or two of elite hockey he can still produce and a prospect I'll need to wait a couple years for to be ready and likely making less of an impact than Wright.
