KJ is untouchable unless it’s for matthews. He projects to be better than Nylander and is younger/cheaper and controllable for longer. Add in the other pieces and it’s an easy decline from the jackets

Look at any prospect ranking and he’s top 5-10 prospect in the entire league. Why would the jackets trade him for a player that wouldn’t get them to the playoffs?

Even if the jackets traded for Nylander he would need to come with a team friendly extension to sacrifice futures

Why are Carolina trading up? This doesn't make any sense. If they want to get a first, they can get one without moving most of the mid round picks... because that is where the Canes make their money.

Yeah, those prospect rankings are for ranking him in relation to other prospects, not Johnson to Nylander.

Neither teams take this. Columbus likely values Johnson to the moon, and Toronto does have an immediate fit for him, plus moving Sandin is not something Toronto would want to do. I doubt Columbus wants Nylander, tho he would be a very good fit alongside Johnson. I think a deal could be done between the two centering around 6th overall with another young piece or whatever, but Johnson won’t be moved

Jackets wouldn’t be interested In moving that much out for Nylander. KJ should be a comparable player to Nylander if he continues to grow and develop. He’s already shown flashes of brilliance and has the ability to become even better than Nylander (while not likely).

In short jackets would take KJ for 6 years over Nylander for 2. And that’s without the rest of the package.

Kerfoot may yield a 2nd and a late round pick from someone, but not the Kraken, methinks. Seattle will likely try to use those 2nd rounders to move up in the next 2 drafts. If not, quality prospects would be the second flave of the day, IMO.

My thing with the Jackets is they are in a market where a bad team won't get money. I don't expect them to bring back the same team for a few more years waiting for them to develop. Whether it is KJ and Nylander, they will need to bring in star power to help them make a jump soon or it will be bottom of the league again.

It'd be one thing if we were constantly stuck spinning wheels as a bottom feeder, a la BUF (sorry, guys), but two years ago this team beat TOR in the playoffs*. And it isn't just KJ, it's a Plus B6 guy in Texier, as well as what will likely end up being a good prospect at #12 OA. Nothing would honestly upset more CBJ fans than dumping all of that for two years of Willy. And I still wouldn't see CBJ as a playoff team. The issue wasn't offense, it was defense.

And, from an economic standpoint, Nylander is going to make more over the next two years than KJ likely will over the next, what, 4-6 years?

*Call it "Play-In Tournament" as much as you want, NHL. It was a playoff. Expanded, but still.

The jackets do fine for a smaller market team. They will improve simply from the young guys developing. They aren’t going to ruin the rebuild for trading for a player that won’t eventually win the cup. Also if KJ can turn into even close to Nylanders level in the next few years he will be way more valuable because he will be much cheaper. The owner cares more about the team than money. We have never had an internal cap despite being terrible for most of the franchises existence up until recently

Yes, so sacrifice 7 years of Johnson and whoever they draft at 12 for 2 years of Nylander so they can have a star player and still miss the playoffs. Sorry, but this trade really makes no sense for Columbus.

Columbus isn’t in a market where they have to be competitive, they seem to have a pretty devoted fan base.

I wouldn't say NEVER but we def haven't had an internal in the last decade. During the early days tho it was possible we did...

Yeah that’s true. Like you said it’s been a long time. I think the fan base has grown enough where even if they suck attendance numbers are much better (and still growing). They were in the middle of the league this year.
