It makes zero sense for Columbus.
In the summer, the Coyotes got a pick that was likely projected to be late in the round, and a 2024 2nd for Dvorak. They only got that because of a very unique circumstance where the Canadiens needed a C due to the Kotkaniemi offer sheet. They were shopping him for quite a while before that, and no one met their price. Additionally, he has done nothing to increase his value this season.
A late 1st, and a second two years from now (basically a 3rd) does not get someone up from 26 to 6.
Because of the way this draft is talked about, if New Jersey doesn't see a big difference between the 2nd best prospect and the 6th best, maybe this trade makes sense. They get a top 6 power forward with term, and a 3rd round pick, for moving down 3 spots. They also get Petry, but I am skeptical about whether that is going to be a good thing. He is almost 35 years old, and is signed until he is almost 38.
With all that said, this trade seems like a fan fiction written by a Canadiens fan that is supposed to show how the Canadiens can get the 2nd round pick while getting rid of a punch of players with term who their fans don't even want or value anymore. The Columbus portion is completely unrealistic. The New Jersey portion is only realistic if they have a very specific view of the top 6 prospects that makes all the stuff they are getting to trade down basically free. Historically, it is very unlikely for a team to see no difference between the 2nd overall and 6th overall, but I guess it's possible.
