Blow up the core 4 to load up on high end picks. Assuming the Habs pass on Wright, who would go to the leafs at 2 along with Cooley at 3 with the Arizona pick. The devils have been long rumored to have interest in Campbell, and could slot JT in on the wing. Matthews gets his homecoming in Arizona

So we are trading the 2oA to pay 11 million for our 3rd line center when we have holes everywhere else. Pass.

Arizona declines. They are rebuilding and need picks and young players more than Matthews. That doesn't get Oettinger. Gaudreau gets more than 10 mill a year

You're probably right on Gaudreau, I disagree on Arizona declining on Matthews

Nylander sure as hell doesn't even get close to getting Otter. Top 6 wingers can't pull franchise goalies.

Stars won't ruin their goaltending core and team for the next 5-10 years to acquire a top 6 winger.

LMAO....2OA FOR JT. Also, no team has ever overvalued a UFA rights like Toronto has. No signs of evidence of a team ever spending so much on a non-premiere player not getting an 8th year.

Bravo. You may have passed the Habs fans seeking 2OA with Anderson and Petry and late 1sts.

They would decline because he would leave them in two years, as he would want no part of that rebuild. They could potentially land him in two years as they will only have two to three years or so left in their rebuild.

AM kick starts their re-build. They have been collecting picks/prospects for years and arent any further along. The NHL would LOVE this deal

That’s a funny way to spell Mathew’s in that Dallas trade.

Besides the bad trades, no appreciation of NTCs.

He only has 2 years under contract, by getting him now they won't do too well tanking perhaps, and that's probably the goal for the next 2 seasons at the least. If they do tank and he doesn't do well, he will probably get weary of playing meaningless games all season and decide to test free agency. If they want AM34, it's best to try acquiring him when his contract expires in two years.

Good luck trying to acquire a top 5 player on the planet via free agency when you've won 6 games in 3 years prior.

If they can't acquire him in free agency, what makes you think they can retain him?

That's my whole point, they won't be able to retain him so why would they trade for him (destroying their asset pool in the process)?

Would be just as silly as Toronto blowing up their core for a rebuild.

My point is Mathew’s isn’t available. Neither is Otter but if your going to offer don’t come as low as Nylander.

Let's go ahead and pretend that #1, any of the proposed rosters on this page are realistic, and #2 that Oettinger is worth even close to Matthews.

Let’s get really ridiculous and pretend the leafs will make it out of the first round some day.

Once they trade Nylander for the 2022/23 Vezina winner from Dallas, they will win the cup

Then it would be possible. Right up until you run into a Zamboni driver.
