      Huberdeau/Weegar > Tarasenko/Scandella

      Probably something starting with Kyrou++

Not sure if they would’ve been able to beat it though, that was an insane amount that Florida gave up

I think the Florida offer is much better, and I think it swooped in last because why would anyone leave that sitting on the table?

The Florida offer is just so much better than the proposed St Louis one - If Kryou wasn't involved then it wasn't even remotely close!

Plus we never know if Tarasenko would have waived his NTC for Calgary.
IMO Florida and Calgary did OK by the trade. But I wonder if signing Huberneau to a rich 8 year extension which kicks in when he is 30 years of age is wise for the Flames.

After trading Tkachuk and losing Gaudreau to Columbus, Calgary could not let Huberdeau walk next year under any circumstances.

Better to get him signed quick and hope for the best.

Yeah, I see why Calgary did it....partly to appease the fans and have stability at LW for now nine years. But I think a little differently. If 10.5m X 8 wasn't a good deal for the Flames...don't make the extension. Gee for 10.5m X 8 are there better UFA values out there next season?

Considering that Tkachuk was likely heading to Carolina before Florida swooped in with Huberdeau, the Blues would have had to have started with Kyrou++. I heard the base of the Canes offer was Necas and a first with other quality pieces as well, but it’s kind of hard to pass on a guy who just put up 115pts and a top 4 dman, with a nice prospect and a first. Tarasenko likely wouldn’t have waived for Calgary anyway, and since he was the big piece, the deal fell apart from there.

Calgary probably offered 10.5 million x 8 to Gaudreau and he walked out on it.

I would make the same offer to Huberdeau all day long.

To me, there would be no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Losing Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Huberdeau in the span of 12 months would result in an existential crisis for the Flames.

5 years from now when Hubby starts to decline there is a good chance the cap is close to 100M so it is all relative! Too much worry about 5 years into the future - should focus on the next five years with a bona fide superstar locked up.

I have no issue with this signing !

You're right about a larger cap. But hasn't the NHL been hoping for a expanded cap for decades? Still no big US TV deal. One of the reasons Bettman was hired over 25 years ago was his connections with the NBA and TV rights. If a recession happens, a lot less discrectionary income for folks to spend on sports events and sports clothing etc.
With inflation....maybe 100m is the same as 80m next year

I'll preface this by saying I was team rebuild.

But I don't think a GM can afford to worry about what will happen in 4+ years. It's too far away to try and predict. Cap might go way up, GM might not be here or the team might be in full rebuild. Or maybe the player in question is still a very productive player. No point in trying to guess.

Flames really didn't want to rebuild, even if they lost Johny and Chucky. Calgary has a Vezina finalist, selke finalist center, a jack adams/cup winning coach, and a strong supporting cast outside of that.
The window is right now over the next 4 years. Who cares about after that at this point in time.

Covid caused the cap to stall at $81M in 2019 but in a single decade before that the cap went from $56M in 2009 / 10 to $81.5M in 2019. Had a couple recessions during that period as well so not too worried on that front.

Also just last year the NHL signed a long term $400M per season deal with Disney (ESPN) AND a $225M / yr US TV Deal with Turner Sports - both of which kick in this year. Pretty sure this constitutes a Big US TV Deal.

Not too concerned about the cap not going up!
